Guest article: Envisioning a ‘commercial greenway’ along 28th Avenue

for NE/SE 28th Ave.
(Graphics by Paulsen/Falbo/Davis)
This post is part of our ongoing coverage of the 20s Bikeway Project. It was written by Kirk Paulsen, a member of the project’s stakeholder advisory committee. (He’s also a traffic analyst for Lancaster Engineering by day.)
Hello fellow BikePortland readers, we want your opinion!
But first, a bit of backstory…
I’m a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) for PBOT’s 20s Bikeway project. As you know, the project so far has spurred a lively discussion, especially surrounding the central section along 28th Avenue.

If you are what you wear, being yourself is often a challenge for people who ride bikes.
Armed with the practical tips of guest host Meghan Sinnott, our latest podcast episode is here to help. Sinnott joined producer Lillian Karabaic, Jonathan and me to talk about how to make people say “You got here on a bike?”
We tackle the best heels for biking in; Jonathan’s affection for sport gear (and the times when he decides to abandon it); whether chain guards are necessary; and whether we should “light up our children like road cones” when they hit the road themselves. Even our recording engineer, Brock Dittus, pops in with a tip about men’s pants.
PBOT offers bikers a ‘Quick Fix’ of donuts, coffee and conversation

morning commute on N Willamette Blvd
(with a free donut stop).
(Photos J. Maus/BikePortland)
It was like a mini Sunday Parkways this morning on N Willamette Boulevard. As part of their National Bike Month outreach efforts, The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) set up a “Quick Fix” station to offer free coffee, donuts and lube jobs to anyone who happened to be biking by. And business was brisk.
Andy and Cheryl Kehrli where two of dozens of people who stopped by. Andy held a mug of coffee in one hand and his bike in the other while PBOT staffer Abra McNair lubed up his squeaky chain. “We were just riding over to get coffee and we knew this would be here,” said Andy. He told me he bike commuted to work for nine years before he retired a few years ago. Now he and Cheryl ride every day. “We just sold our Prius,” he said, “Because it never gets driven.”
This part of north Portland (the Overlook/Arbor Lodge/University Park neighborhoods) is booming with bicycling these days and quiet, calm streets like Willamette are a big reason why. It also doesn’t hurt that some of the city’s best neighborhood greenway streets — like Concord, Bryant, and Wabash — criss-cross the area. There were so many people biking out on Willamette this morning that when a car did come rumbling by, it seemed out of place. Or, as PBOT’s McNair put it, “Cars just seem awkward on this street.”

It’s a huge day for gay couples in Oregon, as a U.S. District Court judge ruled that our existing ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

Profile: Nicholas Caleb, lonely voice for better biking in race for council

The best way to understand the only vocally pro-bike candidate in tomorrow’s city elections might actually be to watch him drive a car.
“I drive at 20 mph, 25 mph inside the city at all times,” Nicholas Caleb said in an interview this month. “I just don’t think it’s safe. And I don’t care if people are beeping at me.”
As a campaign that calls, on every one of its signs, for a $15 minimum wage — volunteers favor the green and white version when they’re campaigning downtown, red when they’re in East Portland — the 30-year-old Concordia College adjunct professor’s two-month sprint of a city council race has certainly drawn a lot of beeps.
Bike ride will raise funds for Oregon State Police Fallen Trooper Memorial

When backers of the Oregon State Police Fallen Trooper Memorial decided to have a bike ride to raise funds for the project, they knew just the person they needed call: Ken Chichester.
Chichester retired from the Oregon State Police in 1995 and he’s known to many people for his nightly speeches during the annual Cycle Oregon ride. Chichester has worked with Cycle Oregon for the past 23 years and he’s responsible for route development, ride safety, and permitting. His nightly addresses usually begin with a joke that is so eagerly anticipated that people in the crowd yell “Joke! Joke!” before he even has a chance to speak.
But now Chichester is working on a ride with a much more serious mission. The OSP Fallen Trooper Memorial Bike Ride will happen on August 2nd, the day after the memorial — which has been years in the making — is dedicated on the Capitol Mall in Salem. The memorial is a basalt stone sculpture that weighs about 60 tons and will be engraved with the names of State Troopers who have lost their lives while serving our state.
