With all the depressing absurdity in the news, you could probably use a good bike ride right about now.

Good thing the weekend is right around the corner. And even though we’re coming to the end of Pedalpalooza there’s no shortage of fun to be had.

The aforementioned month-long festival of free bike fun ends with a bang with rides that will illuminate your brain and the night. And who’s ready for a challenge? There’s racing on Mt. Hood and a big adventurous option just on the other side of the Columbia River. And remember this is only a selection of all the great events. Check the calendar for full listings.

From epic challenges to unrivaled hijinx, there are many great things to choose from. And remember, this is just a sampling. The BikePortland Calendar and Shift’s Official Pedalpalooza Calendar have even more.

What do you have planned? I’ll be headed east to the small town of Burns in eastern Oregon for the Skull 120 Gravel Race. Tomorrow night there will be a dinner where locals will offer knowledge about the area and share their hopes for how cycling can help boost their economy.

Here are this week’s selections…

How’s your Pedalpalooza going so far? By all accounts the rides have been great with big turnouts and leaders who’ve kept them interesting and fun. Of course we’re just one week in so hopefully you have paced yourself to keep up with all the action.

If you’d rather escape the city, we suggest heading for wine country for the Joyride (by Cycle Oregon) or the Whiskey Run MTB Festival.

And we’d be remiss to not share a special shout-out to Dan and Dave’s Wedding Ride on Saturday. This dynamic duo of bike fun will tie the knot while pedaling around Ladd Circle!

That buzz in the air is because today is Pedalpalooza-eve. That’s right; the big Kickoff Ride and a whole month of cycling celebrations begins tomorrow.

We will do our best to highlight a selection of Pedalpalooza rides throughout the month; but your best bet is to check the official Shift calendar or grab the current issue of the Portland Mercury for the printed version.

But wait, there’s more! The biggest off-road biking event of the season is Saturday. It’s the Gateway Green MTB Festival and Take a Kid MTB’ing Day all rolled into one. It’ll be like an entire Sunday Parkways happening in the dirt in a single park with activities, food vendors, entertainment, and more.

Here’s our guide to the next three days…
