npGreenway is a group of advocates working to build a trail that connects Cathedral Park in St. Johns to the terminus of the Eastbank Esplanade at the Steel Bridge. I was at their very first meeting back in November of 2005 and I have been watching their progress ever since.
In an exciting development, they have completed their visioning process and have shared a detailed map of the proposed riverfront trail. Check out the PDF (329KB) to get a sense of what they’re working on.

Sweet! I’m really excited about this project, hopefully make it to the next meeting. My only regret (although I’m sure there are reasons) is that the trail doesn’t follow the bluff instead of going through swan island.
I had envisioned something like this before I even heard there was already a group working on it. After this, the next step is to turn Ross Island into a natural area and water fowl reserve and build a ped-only bridge and trails system.
Yeah.. somebody do that! That would be sweet!
It is very nice to see an alternative river crossing (The railroad bridge) as opposed to yet another St.Johns Bridge redux. Ultimately, it is a safer, lower traffic route for cyclists to reach NoPo.
