Tonight’s Trail Blazers ‘Green Game’ will highlight transportation

Tonight’s Item of the Game features Portland’s
non-car transportation modes.

Tonight is Blazers Bike Night and it’s also part of a larger effort by the National Basketball Association and the Portland Trail Blazers organization to be more aware about of their impact on the environment.

All season long the Blazers have used special “Green Games” to highlight areas where they want to reduce their environmental footprint. So far they’ve focused on energy, waste, food, and water conservation. Tonight’s focus area is transportation and Bike Night is the centerpiece of the campaign.

According to the team about 6 percent of Blazer fans walk or bike to the Moda Center. Add the 5 percent who take the bus and 25 percent who take light rail and you’ve got 36 percent of the 19,980 Moda Center fans who get to the game without a car.

In case you haven’t heard, the Portland Trail Blazers are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. After saying goodbye to four of their five starters in the off-season everyone had written this team off. But now they’re sitting comfortably close to the upper ecehelon of the Western Conference and are poised for a playoff run.

Love the Blazers? Don’t forget it’s Bike Night on April 8th

Boys Cali Trip SB to LA ride-24

en route to see the Blazers play in Los Angeles.

Blazers Bike Night is just a few weeks away and we’d love for you to join us. This event combines two things that make Portland great — biking and the Trail Blazers — but it only works out if we get a good crowd.

It’s no secret that I love basketball and I’m a huge NBA fan. And there are few things I like more than combining basketball and my other love — biking. In fact, last week some friends and I celebrated our 40th birthdays by following the team on a California road trip. We saw them play the Sacramento Kings, then we took the train to Santa Barbara and rode our bikes to Los Angeles to see them play the Clippers!

On Wednesday, April 8th our ride to the game will be about 100 miles shorter. We’ll be riding to the game as a group to cheer them on against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The T’wolves have the top rookie in the league right in Andrew Wiggins and with the recent addition of NBA veteran big-man Kevin Garnett, they’re a fun team to watch. [Read more…]

If you haven’t grabbed your tickets for Blazers Bike Night on November 2nd yet, now is the time to do it.

If you buy tickets through our special link — using promo code “bike” — through this Monday (10/6) you’ll be guaranteed to sit in one of the Bike Night sections. That is, our friends at the Trail Blazers have set aside a few sections of seats so we can sit together; but only if you get tickets by Monday.

Since our first announcement last week, we’ve made a few updates and some clarifications about what to expect the night of the event.

Since the first Bike to Blazers we organized back in 2006, our goal has been to showcase cycling for the Trail Blazers organization, the team, and their many fans. We’ve made solid strides toward that goal, but we’re still hoping to make the biking/Blazers connection much stronger.

I’m happy to say that this year, the Blazers reached out to us early wanting to re-energize the Bike Night event and make it bigger and better than ever. As many of you know, I happen to think biking and the Blazers go great together, so I eagerly accepted.

Let it be known that Sunday, November 2nd is Blazers Bike Night at the Moda Center!
