What if you could auction off the right to park a car in front of your home?
Unlimited free on-street car parking is one of the big problems stopping Portland from becoming a better place to live, work, ride a bike, and do business — and a Portland planning expert is floating an interesting solution.
CCC’s Tetteh says creating new ‘avenues to advocacy’ is top priority
After his first 50 days as the CEO of the Community Cycling Center, Mychal Tetteh sees a big problem in the local advocacy ecosystem: Too many people aren’t sure how, where and when to get engaged. And as a result, their voices aren’t being heard.
His solution? A crowd-sourced and curated compendium of all the region’s active transportation events, meetings, comment periods, open houses, and so on. All these things are “avenues to advocacy” that Tetteh would like to make accessible to Portlanders — especially those in underserved communities where many people have trouble meeting their basic needs.
Tetteh outlined his idea for the first time last Thursday at the monthly Bicycle Brown Bag discussion series hosted by the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Active Transportation Division. The CCC also published more about it on their website this morning.

Portlanders raise $1,500 for charity with Cranksgiving bike ride
(Photos by M.Andersen/BikePortland)
In an event organizers said might be the first of a new tradition of charity-oriented bike fun in Portland, 96 cheerful people pedaled across the city Saturday to gather an assigned list of goods from the city’s grocery stores and co-ops.
The alleycat-inspired game, which was part of a 14-year-old American tradition called Cranksgiving, brought in $1,573 worth of dry goods for Outside In, a local nonprofit that helps homeless young people and other marginalized Portlanders.
“This isn’t a race,” one organizer said at the start. “But because this is America, there’s going to be a prize for the first team back. And because this is Portland, there’s going to be a prize for the team with the best costumes.”
The Monday Roundup: Arrested for parenting, red lights for speeders & more
issue of his inability to pick up his kids on foot.
(YouTube screen capture by Howe Motorsports)
Here’s the bike-related news from around the world that caught our eyes this week:
Parent arrested: A Tennessee dad was arrested this month after being told he couldn’t pick up his children from school on foot; he had to wait in the line of cars with everyone else. For some reason, this upset him.
Red lights for speeders: If you’re speeding on this Philadelphia road (and almost everyone is) you’ll activate a red light up ahead.

Stolen in Milwaukie, OR 97222
Stolen:2013-11-23
Stolen From: Stolen from back yard at Briarwood terrace on 65th and King Rd. Kind of bizarre that the lawn maintenance guys were out back of our place cleaning leaves a week prior to theft, the only people who have been back there, since we are tucked away and last townhouse on the row, just seems to coincidentally suspicious. It’s been back there 7 months and been completely untouched, whoever did it knew what they were back there for. All the other bikes weren’t touched, but mine, hmmmmm.
