By Elly Blue When I’ve worked downtown, the highlight of my commute has always been crossing the Hawthorne Bridge. The air quality changes, the breeze shifts, the river is right below you, and the view of other bridges, buildings, and if you’re lucky, a big freighter, make you feel connected to the city.
A group of Portland cyclists have created a new safety information card as part of a campaign to educate motorists about bicycles and increase traffic safety. The new cards will debut tomorrow night at BikeCraft. [Front (larger version here)]
Portland must lead the world in giving free bikes to kids. I’ve heard about several efforts currently underway to take donated bicycles, recondition them, and gave them to low-income kids for Christmas. The Community Cycling Center’s annual Holiday Bike Drive is the most well-known and this year they’re spreading the cheer far and wide.

PDOT and the Community Cycling Center have unveiled an ad they hope will ratchet up the visibility of their new “See and Be Seen” campaign. Below is the ad they plan to unveil tonight at the Bike Light Parade, which is the official kickoff to the campaign:

The Portland Police Bureau found this out the hard way and they want to find a solution and have the laws fixed for good at the upcoming legislative session in Salem.
A group of Portland transportation activists are putting together a bid to try and persuade the World Carfree Network — the “hub of the global carfree movement” — that Portland would be an ideal place for their yearly conference, Towards Carfree Cities.

Starting today, Police officers in Missoula Montana will give away a free set of bike lights to cyclists stopped for not having them. Sound familiar? It should. The program takes a page out of a similar program by the Portland Police Bureau that began over a year ago.
