Last week Portland Transport reported that the idea of recycling the old Sauvie Island Bridge and turning it into a bike and pedestrian overpass in Northwest Portland was dead.
However judging from this statement from a post on Commissioner Sam Adams’ blog, the idea might still have some life:
“When all is said and done, the project will really only be able to proceed if the surrounding neighborhoods rally around the project and work to significantly fill the $1.5 million gap facing the Sauvie Island Bridge Project.”
So now they’re actually calling it a “project”! OK, so how do we organize this? $1.5 million seems like a drop in the bucket when you look at the prevailing demographics of Northwest Portland.
Any socialites out there who can organize a big fundraiser? This computerized rendition says it all.

This is such a cool, smart idea; I don’t know how Portland could pass on it. Just think of the publicity! Just think of being able to watch them move it. Just think how great it would be for bikes and peds! Recycling a bridge has “Platinum” written all over it.
