I’m excited to announce the Made in Portland Bicycle Show and Art Exhibition coming to City Hall on Thursday July 6th from 5-8PM.
Join us in a celebration of our artisan bicycle industry as we showcase Portland’s independent, custom builders and artists. As I reported last month, this event is part of Commissioner Sam Adams’ monthly First Thursday celebration and will take place in the beautiful atrium of our historic City Hall building at 1221 SW Fourth Street downtown.
Here is the list of builders confirmed to attend:
- Joseph Ahearne – Ahearne Cycles
- Ira Ryan – Ira Ryan Cycles
- Sacha White – Vanilla Bicycles
- Andy Newlands – Strawberry Bicycles
- JoJo Paquini – Paquini Cycles
- Tony Pereira – Pereira Cycles
- Bill Stites – Stites Designs
- Natalie Ramsland – Sweetpea Bicycles
- Landon Holt – Tonic Fabrication Group
- Chris King Precision Components
In addition to these bike builders, we’ve put together an exhibition of bike art that will hang in the offices of three city commissioners throughout the month. Here’s the current list of confirmed artists:
- Carye Bye – Bike-themed letterpressed cards.
- Emily Meier – Pen and watercolor event flyers.
- Matt Cardinal – Chalk drawings.
- David “Chops” Darby – Sculpture using recycled bike parts.
- Shawn Granton – Bike event posters.
- Shaun Deller

So save the date and join us for bikes, art, free drinks and food at this very special First Thursday event.

One of the things that our city is famous for right behind the incredible handmade (and high-dollar frames) is the other handmade bike : the freak bike. The freakbike : practical transportation or rolling kinetic scuplture? You only have to go as far as the clown house or show up at Zoobomb to see examples of these bikes. And I am wondering why an exibit of handmade bikes AND bike-related art would not include the sawed up welded together wheeled monstrosities and abeerations that we freakwently see in the streets of Portland.
Hey Skidmark,
Believe it or not I actually had the exact same idea! I was talking to Chops at the Bike Fair and I said it would be amazing to have a show just for all the choppers, mutant, tall, freak, mini bikes, etc…
This is just one show organized by one guy with just a few weeks notice.
I’m all for a Portland Freak Bike Show. Keep in touch and maybe we can make it happen sooner rather than later.
Well I think at the very least a freak bike ride should be organized for this upcoming 1st Thursday.
Maybe a freak bike ride could be organized by Dropout bike club and could end up in front of City Hall?
I am better at promoting than organizing and I don’t know how to get ahold of chops or deadbuny. My email is aeeightysix@hotmail.com
OKAY, I cross-posted this to zoobomb.net under EVENTS giving credit to BikePortland.org. The Idea is to meet at the bike show, lock up our freakbikes out front (a freakbike pre-show) and take in the fine industrial design and art. At the end of the show we will go on a short ride that involves taking the MAX and riding our bikes down a hill near the ZOO.
