Portland bike industry round-up

I got my December issue of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News yesterday. Each time it comes the first thing I do is make a quick scan for any Portland-specific news.

This month it seemed like Portland was on every other page…so I figured I’d do a quick round-up. The stories aren’t available online and it’s an industry-only publication so I’ve included a brief synopsis for each one:

“Eurobike Pulls on 2007 Portland Show”
    But you already knew that.

“King Cycle Expands Offerings with Long-Awaited Wheelsets”
The Portland-based manufacturer is now (once again) offering pre-built wheels. They’re only available in pink and proceeds go to breast cancer research. Wheelsets will sell for $700-800 and will be built at their factory in Northwest Portland. The story ends with a mysterious reference saying, “King will introduce another product soon.”

    “Seven Corners Moves; Increases Inventory”

A nice story about Corey Cartwright moving his popular Southeast Portland bike shop to a larger location (from 900 to 3,400 sq. ft.). I reported this a few weeks ago, but the story in BRAIN is much better and has some nice quotes from Corey including this one, “The fixed gear thing, it’s rampant…it’s become a status thing, but it’s practical in the rainy wet climate.”

    “Merchandising Takes a Keen Eye”
A story about retail store fixtures featured River City Bicycles owner Dave Guettler. He offers tips for bike shops on how to display their products and shares his own passion for making fixtures himself, “I’m an amateur woodworker who loves to design things, so I designed and built all of our fixtures from cherry wood.” (Dave also makes a full line of wooden fenders.)

    “Product Review”
They feature a product review of SW Portland-based Showers Pass’s new Touring jacket. Read my report on this jacket from last month.

    Product Review
Local bike builder Andy Newlands (Terra Nova Cycles / Strawberry Bicycles) gets a plug for his new tube mitre cutters which are used to cut steel, titanium and aluminum tubing.
