Bike spirit catches on at Lake Oswego High School

What started as a brainstorm in their Political Action Seminar class, has led four Lake Oswego teens to form the Lake Oswego High School Bike Project. Yes, the powers of bike fun can even penetrate the hallowed halls of Portland’s smartest high school (according to Wikipedia, LOHS has the highest SATs in the Portland metro).

The Bike Project was formed by juniors Sarah Hansen, Dayna Remmers, Hayley Luhr, and Lisa Carrigg. In addition to organizing a bike collection drive to benefit the Community Cycling Center, the up-and-coming bike funnists are actively planning the first-ever Lake Pedal, a recreational ride inspired by the popular Lake Run event. The ride sounds like fun. Here’s more from Lisa Carrigg:

“It’s a pretty low stress, just fun bike ride through part of Lake Oswego. We are planning a stop at the Farmer’s Market in downtown LO as well as a barbeque/picnic (maybe live music) at Lake Oswego High School, our start and finish point. It’s more of a recreational ride focused on biking for the joy of it.”

The girls not only plan to keep it going once their class is over, they’ve already got big plans for next year:

“Next year we plan on focusing a lot more on the younger age groups, and bike safety and basics, starting young to encourage more avid and safe bikers later. We are pretty much just really jazzed about being environmentally friendly, and want other people to be too. And biking is a great means of alternate transportation, that’s healthy and environmentally beneficial, the best of both worlds.”

It’s great to hear teens getting so jazzed about bikes. I can’t wait to check out the scene out in Lake O.

The CCC bike collection drive is set for May 14th from 9am-noon at Lake Oswego High School. The Lake Pedal ride will be on June 10th. For more information you can email the LOHS Bike Project at lohsbikeproject@yahoo.com

These kids are great! They have so much energy, as well as a talent for getting things done. It's clear they'll go far, and luckily for us they love bikes.
