The City of Portland has removed the new bike lanes on NE 33rd Ave
There was no one to stop them this time.
Facing pushback from neighbors over parking loss, and realizing they bungled the public outreach process, PBOT planned to remove the bike lane on NE 33rd Avenue between NE Holman and NE Dekum.
Then bike advocates stepped in (literally).

“Anyone doing so are not acting in the best interest of promoting biking.”
It’s sort of a ‘don’t throw the baby out with the bath water’ defense
PBOT couldn’t find a way forward that included a bike lane.

They ultimately got the bike lane. Sort of. It’s complicated.
A veteran staffer says they’ve learned hard lessons and will work to restore trust from all sides.
A letter sent to residents makes the existing bike lane almost meaningless.
Local media loves a trend story. And unfortunately PBOT’s trend isn’t great for bikes.
Protestors beat back an attempt to remove the bike lane. For now.
The reason appears to be that insufficient notice was given to the neighborhood.
