🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

Report
About 50 excited riders gathered at Dovetail Bakery on NE Alberta for the Vegan Baked Goods Ride. Dovetail had been gracious enough to put “Welcome Pedalpalooza” and “Vegan Baked Goods Ride starts here” signs in their window and on their sidewalk sign. As the riders arrived, they got coffee, mini scones, yummy glazed muffins and cinnamon rolls and talked on the sidewalk. The bakers even made us mini versions of some treats.

From there, we went a few blocks down the street to Back to Eden Bakery, picking up a couple new riders on the way. There we enjoyed the tallest berry pie I’ve ever seen, soft serve ice cream, strawberry shortcake whoopie pies (indescribably good), cupcakes, danishes and more. The line went out the door and down the sidewalk nearly to the corner!

The ‘Cirque’ delivers racing, art bikes (and nakedness)

Cirque du Cycling Art Bike Parade-26

Once again, the Cirque du Cycling delivered. The third annual event, dreamed up and (generously) supported by Laughing Planet Cafe, took over Mississippi Street with a full day of bike parades, racing, community booths, and more.

The Art Bike Parade (slideshow below) featured some excellent entries and was punctuated (for the second year in a row) by a visit from participants of the Sunny Nekkid Ride. As the Art Bike Parade wound down, scores of people — most of them completely nude — rode up Mississippi Avenue as large crowds looked on (photos below might be NSFW).

Filmmaker visits Portland and Vancouver to document ghost bikes

Filmmaker Meaghan Wilbur

New York City independent film maker and bike enthusiast Meaghan Wilbur is in Portland and Vancouver this week filming interviews for her ghost bike documentary, a project she says is about “exploring the intersection of street art, activism, and mourning on the streets of cities around the world.”

In an interview Friday night, the gregarious 27 year-old talked about her project and her motivations. “I hope to expand people’s horizons; I want everyone to understand what a ghost bike stands for.” However, in her quest, Wilbur is being mindful of the inherent sensitivity surrounding the subject. “When I started [the ghost bike project], I didn’t want to be in people’s face while they were grieving… Right now, I am focusing on connecting with people and letting them share their stories.”

The community of people who raced with and knew David Oliphant are keeping him in their thoughts at events throughout Portland. Oliphant suffered a cardiac arrest after crossing the finish line of a race at Portland International Raceway last Tuesday night. He died later the same evening at a local hospital.

Remembrances from friends and family have poured in via comments. On Saturday, prior to races at the Cirque du Cycling, racers took off their helmets, lowered their heads, and observed a moment of silence.

City will hold public meeting to discuss Holgate bike lanes

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation will hold a public meeting on June 22nd to hear feedback on the SE Holgate buffered bike lanes. The lanes were painted last August as part of a demonstration project along with similar lanes on SW Oak and Stark streets in downtown Portland.

Since the new lanes were installed, PBOT has heard loud and clear that not everyone who uses Holgate is thrilled with them. Back in May, KATU-TV did a prime-time ‘Special Report’ on the lanes, interviewing several disgruntled business owners and coining them the “bike lanes to nowhere.”

Racers, let this be a lesson to you…

All smiles on the podium, but…

There was some great racing action at the Laughing Planet Cafe/Cirque du Cycling event on Mississippi Avenue on Saturday. The heat tested the racers, but the crowds more than made up for it.

Speaking of crowds, racer Samuel Nicoletti (Gentle Lovers) might have gotten a bit carried away by their loud roars on the finishing straight. He had a small lead over Quinn Keogh (Rubicon-ORBEA/Lance Armstrong Foundation) and raised his hands in the air to celebrate. The only problem was, he did it a bit premature and Keogh nipped him at the line. Check out the photo series below to see the reactions of both racers as it happened…
