‘Bike Back the Night’ ride will raise awareness of sexual assault

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

It’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month and two local women’s groups are teaming up to host a Bike Back the Night ride tonight.

Erin Danielson is an intern at Portland State University’s Women Resource Center and co-chair of this year’s Take Back the Night/Bike Back the Night event. She says they’ve found a bike ride is, “An excellent way to help spread awareness to a larger audience than we could with just the march alone.” She also wants to clarify that, “The purpose of the bike ride is not to raise awareness about women being assaulted while biking.”

I did this ride back in 2008. Check out my photos and recap here.

Learn more on the event’s Facebook page and via the blurb below from a press release:

In celebration of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Portland Women’s Crisis Line and Portland State University’s Women’s Resource Center will be collaborating to host Take Back the Night/Bike Back the Night on April 25th, 2013. This year, our theme is Military Sexual Trauma: Break the Silence. TBTN/BBTN seeks to end sexual violence in all of its forms including sexual assault, sexual abuse, dating violence, and domestic violence. Our goal is to create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness events and initiatives.

We invite you to become part of the solution and break the silence about sexual violence in our communities. The event will include an empowering rally, music, guest speakers, a choice of march or bike ride, a survivor speak out, and a unifying vigil.

Our first speaker is from Basic Rights Oregon and will share us information about interpersonal violence and the LGBTQ community. In addition, our keynote speaker, Dr. Rebecca Hannagan, a visiting Associate Professor of Political Science and an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Women, Politics & Policy, will inform us about the issue of military sexual trauma. One in three women in the armed forces will be raped during her service. Men also experience higher rates of sexual violence in the military.

‘Circle Century’ documents 660 lap, 100-mile ride around Ladd Circle

Still from Circle Century.

Southeast Portland resident and hobbyist movie maker Merritt Raitt debuted a new film at Filmed by Bike over the weekend. Circle Century documents his attempt to ride 100 miles, non-stop around Ladd Circle.

Raitt, who lives just a few houses down from the circle, accomplished his feat back in August 2011 but his movie has just now been released to the public. I followed up with Merritt to ask him a bit more about what it was like to ride a 0.15 mile loop of a neighborhood street 660 times without any breaks.

Involved in a hit-and-run? New tool shows location of security cameras

Google map of security cameras in downtown Portland.

When vehicles collide out on the roads, private and public security cameras often play a major role in providing evidence. Law enforcement officials pull security video footage to get a closer look at hit-and-run and bike theft suspects, to validate or disprove witness statements about how the collision occurred, and so on.

Just this morning, a road rage incident caught on video in Los Angeles is making the rounds. And last year, a Multnomah County DA used security camera footage from City Hall in downtown Portland to help them recreate a fatal collision at SW 3rd and Madison.

But as a citizen it’s often impossible to know if your incident was even captured to begin with. Now there’s a new tool, CommunityCam, that features a publicly-accessible Google Map of private and business security cameras. The map shows the location of hundreds of cameras in the Portland area.

PBOT loses its only two communications staffers

Walk and Bike to School Day!

event in 2005.

The communications issues at the Portland Bureau of Transportation just got worse. After hearing about it yesterday from Bureau sources, I’ve now confirmed with the Mayor’s office that PBOT’s two current communications staffers — Dan Anderson and Cheryl Kuck — are on their way out. No official statements have been made, but sources say Kuck has moved over to the Bureau of Environmental Services and Anderson is taking a job up in Washington.

“Cheryl and I are both leaving the bureau on great terms. The timing is a coincidence,” said Anderson via email this morning.

Communications have long been a trouble spot for PBOT and in recent years a lack of resources and staff at that position has led to a number of PR missteps that have hurt both the bureau and bicycling in general (“Blood in the bike lanes,” “sewer money for bike lanes” and the SE Holgate controversy being just a few examples).

Joe Partridge at OATS

Transportation Summit yesterday.

Following the tsunami in Japan in 2011, the idea of using bicycles in response to major disasters has quickly gained momentum around the country. Now the former Deputy for Planning and Preparedness for Multnomah County’s Emergency Management Disivion, Joe Partridge, has left his job at the County to launch Genevieve Consulting. One of the main focus areas of Partridge’s new company is, “integrating bikes and active transportation into emergency management”

You might recall Partridge’s perspective on bikes and disasters from an interview we published with him back in May 2011. Now Partridge is combining his expertise from 15 years of working in emergency management with his respect and appreciation of bicycles to take his ideas to the next level. Partridge had a booth at the Oregon Active Transportation Summit yesterday and is already making connections with government agencies and advocates throughout the state.

Here’s more about his new business:
