‘Portland Bike Station’ coming to downtown?

Several readers have alerted me to a mysterious sign posted on a vacant storefront on SW 3rd that reads, “Coming Soon… Portland Bike Station”.

I made a few calls and couldn’t find out much about it. One source did confirm for me that it is legit and that something is in the works. I’ll have more as soon as I find out.

One other thing I’ve confirmed is that it won’t be a Bikestation, as in the officially trademarked name of the non-profit organization that has its branded facilities in Seattle, Santa Barbara, Long Beach, and other cities.

Back in 2007, the executive director of Bikestation visited Portland to chat up local officials, but nothing ever materialized from that visit. The old Powell’s travel bookstore in Pioneer Square was once eyed as a Bikestation, but KGW swooped in and now does their “Studio on the Square” from that location.

The mysterious “Portland Bike Station” shown in the photo above is on a storefront at 515 SW 3rd near SW Washington. That would put it nicely in line with the west end of the Morrison Bridge, which as we all know is currently getting a major bike facility improvement. Here’s a map:

Could it be… No wait, it’s coming to me… how about… another bike shop? Oh how mysterious… Note the sarcasm, yes it’s intended.

Portland bike shops, becoming as ubiquitous as Starbucks. Sign o’ the times, and a good one at that.

It’s only good until they’re so ubiquitous that they start folding, a sign of too much bike industry concentrated in one place and falling down under its own weight. Stay tuned. It could happen here.

Who knows, it just might be a cozy, biky kind of bar…
here’s hoping for the best.

The name’s not yet registered with the Secretary of State.

If they stick with the name “Portland Bike Station,” I suspect whomever is behind this will have a trademark lawsuit on their hands PDQ.

maybe it’s a shop for stationary bikes?
