Grab your children and run for cover because Mini-bike Winter is coming. Starting Wednesday, local bike fun agitators from near and far will descend upon our fair city for a five-day feast of 16″ wheeled madness. Or, in the words of one of the organizers, “an extended weekend of naked rides, office chair death races, spray paint parties and little wheel pain.”
Sound like fun to you? Here’s the official event flyer, and here are some of the events on the schedule:
- Wednesday:
Bike Polo at Colonel Summers Park – Open to the public. Bikes and gear will be supplied. - Friday:
Mini-bike Steeplechase – “This event is not for the faint of heart. Race last about a hour and is on road and off road. just follow the trail marked out by flags or glowsticks and try to make it to the end.” There’s also a house party featuring performances by the Sprockettes, Show me the Pink, and more… - Saturday:
Dance Party and Bike Fashion Show, followed by a Naked Ride (should be a cold one!). Here’s a quote from one of the Naked Ride organizers, “There will be bags for clothes and official minibike winter fannypacks for your family jewels, er, I mean valubles. Unless you are a real hard ass, whiskey will be necessary by this point.” If you’ve never done a naked bike ride, I’d highly recommend it. It’s quite memorable to say the least, and planners are keeping their fingers crossed for a blizzard (they’re sick like that)! - Sunday:
Mini-bike Winter Olympics commence. Events include; Mini-bike toss, Ghost ride competition, backwards riding competition, mini-bike jousting, mini-bike derby, and of course a whole lot more. There will also be a special mini-bike Zoobomb race, “the most prized event of the winter olympics”
And these are only the public events. Other crazy stuff can only be known through word-of-mouth. For more information on when and where the events happen, check the listings on the Shift calendar or ask around for more secret info. Now, I just hope Eleni lets me borrow her bike!
