The bicycle drag races known as “street sprints” are coming back to the Pearl District this Saturday. Last year, the inaugural event drew 80 competitors, all vying to see who was fastest over the three block course.

The ‘Speed Never Sleeps’ event is bike racing in its purest form; four riders start from a dead stop and the top two advance to the next round. There’s no drafting and no bumping (you must hold your line).

Promoter Dave Aldersebaes says he expects an even better turnout this year. He’s lined up a huge prize list and cash for the winners. The races take place on NW 13th and competitors pedal south to Northrup.

If you don’t plan to race, this is a great event to watch. “The ‘stadium-style’ seating of the shipping docks lining the course make for excellent spectating,” says Aldersebaes.

NOTE: At BikePortland, we love your comments. We love them so much that we devote many hours every week to read them and make sure they are productive, inclusive, and supportive (heck, sometimes we even fix your typos!). That doesn't mean you can't disagree with someone. It means you must do it with tact and respect. This is our business and we do not tolerate mean commenters who add nothing of value to the discussion.

Unfortunately, we are not robots and we don't always catch everything. You can help by notifying us if you see inappropriate comments. Thanks! — Jonathan and Michael
