Portland State cycling team set for another stellar year

2010 is set to be another banner year for the Portland State University Cycling Club.

In 2008, team member Anita Dilles represented PSU at the Collegiate Track Nationals and in 2009, Amelia Bjesse-Puffin made two appearances on the podium. These successes on the track, along with their involvement off the race course, has earned them “Collegiate Cycling Club of the Month” honors this month from USA Cycling.

Far from just a hardcore racing team, the PSU Cycling club welcomes riders of all ages and abilities. Last year they pushed the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference (NWCCC) to add a competitive handcycling category!

Team member Peter Welte says the team is psyched for the upcoming 2010 season and he expects their road team to be at the top of the conference standings this year. The NWCCC road season runs seven weekends from March 13th to April 25th and Road Nationals are in May. Welte says PSU’s new Student Rec Center has become a favorite hangout for workouts.

“We have weekly Wednesday night workout sessions on the new spin bikes; the sessions are followed with relaxing and socializing in the hot tub… and sometimes a few laps in the pool for those of us not too worn down from the spinning!”

Welte adds that they’re always on the lookout for new club members. If you’re a PSU student and want to get involved with a fun and inclusive bike team, show up for one of their Saturday club rides or drop a line to team president Adrian Richardson at wakeupadrian[at]gmail[dot]com.

Go Vikings!

Is it wrong to think that the cycle team should put together a Portland style pinup calender as a fund raiser? Just thinking its about time someone displaces cheerleaders as the top sex symbol

Kudos to the team. I like how they have both racing and recreational riders.

Jason, I’m not on the team but I’m gonna have to say that, in my opinion, yeah, its a little wrong.

Jason-
It’s not like this is an animal shelter in the bible belt of America.
Your comment is really in poor taste! (Sarcasm)

As a proud alumna of Portland State University I am thrilled to see that cycling has returned to campus with a bang.

It’s important to remember that cycling at Portland State — and at most colleges and universities — is a CLUB sport.

In club sports, no tuition scholarships are offered to students who race, and that students must pay for everything themselves, either out-of-pocket or through fundraising.

Yes, sponsors help to defray some costs (racers get discounts on purchases of equipment, for example), and a very small percentage of student fees get channeled towards club sports as a whole (to be divided further among the dozens of clubs on campus). Bt the students still have to pay to participate — AND must still juggle a full course load without any of the “helps” available to students in “big-time” college sports like football and basketball (i.e., scholarships to help with tuition, paid travel costs and private tutors).

Every rider racing for PSU makes a great statement about the many unsung heroes that populate club sports with little or no recognition or support outside their local activity. They are, in my humble opinion, the truest student-athletes.

Thanks for covering this story and shining a light on their accomplishments.

good to see us up here! sorry not to be able to represent this year…

and, as far as pin-up calendars go, yeah, i’d rather see a bunch of cyclists than a bunch of cheerleaders – sexy, sexy legs!
