The folks at Widmer Brothers Brewery are so excited to have a new, on-street bike parking corral in front of their Gasthaus Pub (on N. Russell at Interstate), they’re planning a party to celebrate.

On September 2nd they’ll host an event called “Bikes and Brews”. Widmer spokesperson Mindy Green says from 5:30 – 8:00 they’ll have bike-related exhibitors, beer specials and a raffle throughout the day “to patrons with helmets”. Among the raffle prizes are four entry passes to the 2010 Cycle Oregon Weekend Ride.

The new corral is the 21st on-street bike parking facility installed by the Bureau of Transportation. It features 10 staples and has capacity for 20 bicycles. The racks were funded by the Portland Development Commission through their Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Area program and are part of the Russell Streetscape Plan.

Widmer Brothers Brewing is a longtime supporter of local bike advocacy efforts from Cycle Oregon and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance. In December 2008, we profiled their entire building devoted to employee bike parking.

We’ll keep you posted on this event as more details get ironed out.

D’oh! SO infringing on my event’s name! Where’s the love?

And that’s a misleading name!
Shouldn’t it be called Helmets and Brews?
I mean riding your bike doesn’t seem to give you the pass to attend.
Weird!

Jacque, I was laughing at the same thought.

I suppose it is hard to know who rides a bike to an event, other than handing out raffle tickets to cyclists as they arrive with their bikes. And since there is a raffle, anyway…

They probably did not intend to land in the middle of the helmet debate. Silly brewers.

Now, how about some biking directions to go with the driving directions on their web site..

I suppose some will just wear bike gear with lots of logos to look they ride, even though their BMW X5 is parked out back.

The staples look so much better mounted at an angle to the street than they do mounted at right angles to it. Helps too, to keep the bikes parked there from jutting out quite so far into the street.

They probably figure the customers with helmets on will be around longer… zing!
