Another weekend full of excellent and fun bike events is upon us (we are lucky aren’t we!?).

Here’s the rundown:

Friday, August 21

4:30 – 6:30pm: Bikes, Boheme, and Beer
The Portland Opera wants to hang out with all the people on bikes that pass by their headquarters on the Esplanade just south of OMSI. Complimentary beverages and opera singers will be present.

5:30pm – 7:00pm (ride at 6:00): Kidical Mass Downtown
Join families and kids for a fun group ride through the streets of downtown Portland.

9:30pm: Dropout Bike Club Monthly Ride
Join a friendly group of freak bike lovers for a late-night ride to a mystery location. Expect music, fun, and???

Saturday, August 22

10:00am – 4:00pm: Portland Adult Soap Box Derby
This is one of the most beloved events in Portland. Not specifically bike-related… but all the entrants are human powered and there’s definitely some bike technology being used. Check out fun photos and more info over on the Portland Mercury Blog.

11:00am: Team Beer Track Race
Team Beer has rounded up nearly $5,000 in prizes for this track racing event at Alpenrose Dairy in the SW hills. The location makes a great destination for a ride (they’re also leading a ride to the event if you’re interested).

9:00am – 12 noon: Trail Maintenance Party in Forest Park
Join the Northwest Trail Alliance, Portland Parks, Forest Park Conservancy and Americorps for a volunteer work party on Forest Park’s sweetest bit of singletrack — Firelane 5. Sweat equity! Registration recommended so they know how many tools to bring. Also bring work gloves, water and proper dress for the weather.

1:00pm – 3:00pm: Awesome Architecture Ride
Ride through the beautiful Alameda and Irvington neighborhoods, scoping out interesting houses along the way. Organizers say it will be “more fun that educational”.

5:00pm: Hands Free Derby II
Think you can ride well with no hands? Come out and show your stuff. A course will be set up in Columbia Park and the last person to put their fut down will get bragging rights.

Sunday, August 23

10:00am: Portland Wheelmen Family Ride
This ride starts at Willamette Park and will work its way up to the Steel Bridge, entertaining the little ones all along the way.

12 noon: Southern Fried Move by Bike
Come and take part in the outstanding Portland tradition of bike moves. The theme for this one is tank tops and 5 o’clock shadow.

Let us know about other great events we might have left out. Enjoy the weekend!

hmm, not sure where you got noon, but the hands-free derby on saturday is actually at 5pm, not noon. sorry to anyone who shows up at the wrong time, but the postings have all said 5pm. hope to see you there–it’ll probably be an hour or hour and a half, be done before dark.

And of course there’s Mt. Bike Oregon! Chris King is preparing dinner in camp right now. Hundreds of riders are out on the trails and it’s a great day for mt. biking in Oakridge.

Just got home from a lovely party in NE, and wanted to issue a warning: Septic spill of some kind on west end of Broadway Bridge, right in the bike lane as you leave the bridge. AVOID THIS: that’s not water on the road. Now scrubbing self, bikes, panniers… ugh. Puts a serious damper on an otherwise gorgeous night out.

We had our annual block party. It was a blast. I heard someone call it “like a mini-Sunday Parkways.”

I wish I was a(n actual) kid in Portland this summer.
