Portland, Beaverton will join annual Ride of Silence

Residents of Portland, Beaverton and six other Oregon cities will take to the streets on their bicycles tomorrow as part of the annual Ride of Silence.
They’ll join nearly 300 cities worldwide taking part in the event which seeks to raise awareness of bicycles on the road by remembering those who have lost their lives on two wheels.
The rides are somber, yet powerful for those who participate, and are done in a “funeral-like procession.”
In Portland, the BTA will lead a seven-mile ride from the North Park Blocks to the sites of several recent fatal crashes. BTA director Scott Bricker will make a short speech and the ride will be officially escorted by the Portland Police Bureau.

In Beaverton, the Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition will host a ride that will make a six-mile loop around the city — passing ghost bikes along the way.

All the support for the Ride of Silence is great and to only be expected from Portland.
The bike club I'm part of has managed to get a ride together in Central Missouri. We managed to get police escort including 2 uniformed officers on bikes to ride with us. A local company donated signs and flyers and the local newspapers will be covering the event. We also got free radio ads to promote the ride.
All in a town of 20,000 people.
Thanks for supporting the ride and know that it is taking place even in places not considered great centers for cycling.

The Ride of Silence in Salem is at 6 PM today starting from the Red Lot at the corner of Center & 12th St.

I hope that the cyclists involved in this ride make the decision to ride legally.
At a semi-recent memorial ride, I turned a corner in my car to be met with several cyclists riding into oncoming traffic.
Though I was not doing anything illegal, had I not slammed on my brakes, several cyclists could have been hurt, or even killed.
Would it had been my fault? No. But I really resented being put in that position.
