TriMet passenger talks to the Tribune

Someone just emailed me a link to Phil Stanford’s column in the Portland Tribune. They got an interview with the guy that beat up Randy. Turns out his nickname is “Gater” and he’s an ex-boxer! Here’s an excerpt:
“Gater says he was on his way to work that morning when this guy - who’d been keeping the bus from passing him for several blocks - up and stopped in the middle of the Hawthorne Bridge. … At which point, Gater, who happens to be an ex-boxer, got off the bus and told him to move it. … When he didn’t, Gater says, he threw just one punch, and not a very good one at that. … As for the police, Gater says, he’s not particularly concerned, since by his calculations the statute of limitations expired Monday.”
Just one punch? Looked like more than that to me. And “not a very good one”…wow I’d hate to see what would have happened to Randy if the guy really landed one…as it was Randy split his lip open and took a trip to the ER.

Interesting. If I recall, in some jurisdictions a boxer's hands are considered lethal weapons. Seems this could be considered a more serious crime that could have a longer statute of limitations. But, my recollection could be totally incorrect and "Gator" could get away scott free from assaulting another human being. It's a weird world we live in.

Statute of limitations runs out and the Tribute knows who he is? Do the cops not work on weekends anymore or are they to busy giving tickets to bikers?

the statute of limitations on assault is a year? are we sure "gater" knows what he's talking about on that?

Statute of limitations is two years for most crimes in Oregon. Homicide and some sexual assault related crimes are longer.

Statute of limitations should only apply to criminal. Randy can still hit him with a civil case.

If a detective really wanted to find "Gater", he/she could. "Gater" is an ex-boxer, and we have photo/video of him on and off the Tri-Met bus. Someone with some extra time on their hands could do some sleuthing and track down Gater--name, address, phone number, the works. Then use the Ray Thomas guide to get the police to serve this guy with a citation. If people tracked him down, "Gater" would have two choices--leave town before the police catch up with him or show up and face Randy in court.

You, too can file suit.
You have at least 5 attorneys on staff from the comments above.
OR, force him to leave town if you can't sue him. OR throw bricks at him (if you want to get that close).
If the police WANTED to find him, don't you think they would have by now.
