Holladay Park welcomes weary cyclists

STP Party at Holladay Park

Yesterday thousands of cyclists rolled down Highway 30, crossed the Broadway Bridge and rolled into Holladay Park near the Lloyd Center. The occassion was the 27th annual pedaling pilgrammage known as the STP or, Seattle-to-Portland bike ride.

Organized by Cascade Bicycle Club, STP has become an institution for thousands of Northwest cyclists.

From what I heard it was a near-perfect event. The weather cooperated and so did a nice, northerly wind all the way from Seattle.

The Sprockettes, Portland’s very own mini-bike dance troupe, have finally hit the big time. They will be the subject of an upcoming segment on the national NPR show Day to Day.

The producer was down from Seattle over the weekend to get audio for the story at a Sprockette’s performance.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Sprockettes fan so this is great news.

Also, in anticipation of the show, the girl’s have just unveiled their new website at Sprockettes.org. Go check out their website and stay tuned for an update with the link to the show.

Congrats ladies!

Just want to give a shout out to listeners of The Playhouse. Welcome to BikePortland.org. This is a blog that covers the cycling community here in Portland and it is open to everyone with constructive input on the issues.

If you are trying to post hateful or divisive comments about the recent situation I will not publish them.

I know you found this site because PK spent most of this morning’s show talking about our reaction to comments he made on his show on Thursday.

Notes from the ArtBike party

ArtBike unveiling at Weir's Cyclery

[Top tube detail.]

Last night I pedaled out to St. Johns to visit Portland’s oldest bike shop and catch a glimpse of the 2006 ArtBike. I really like this program (organized by Portland Open Studios) because it combines art and bikes while encouraging people to ride.

While at the party I ran into Dean Cannard of Acme Paint. Dean is well-known for his expertise as a bicycle painter. He currently paints for many local builders including Vanilla Bicycles and his work is considered top-notch by many.

Make cyclists count by counting cyclists

BTA Bike Boulevard Ride

[Too many to count.]

Roger Geller, Portland’s bike program manager needs volunteers to help count cyclists at key intersections throughout the city.

Roger is working on an update to our 10 year-old Bicycle Master Plan and an accurate count of cyclists is an important piece of the puzzle. The number of cyclists using our roadways may be the single most important tool advocates and planners have when it comes to lobbying and fighting off anti-bike rhetoric.
