This weekend starts off slow and then builds up to some great events starting Saturday afternoon.  Take some time to enjoy the beautiful fall colors or clean up the bike, just in time to take it out and cover it with more mud and leaves.

Introducing Upcycles, a new shop for the Woodlawn neighborhood

On Sunday, May 16th, a long-unused garage door creaked open at 911 NE Dekum Street, revealing the newest business in the Woodlawn neighborhood, Upcycles. Based in a single car garage space that’s been lightly remodeled, Upcycles is co-owner Kai Druzdezel and Mark Hoskins’ entry into the growing number of bicycle shops in Portland. Their opening coincided with the NE Portland Sunday Parkways, which passed through the sprawling Woodlawn Park, which is just next door to the shop.

Local filmmaker Dan Kaufman has released a new video that takes viewers on a trip along the future location of the North Willamette River Greenway Trail. In the video (below), you’ll join the advocates from non-profit group npGreenway who are working towards making the trail — that will eventually connect the Eastbank Esplanade at the Steel Bridge with Cathedral Park in St. Johns — a reality…

Some very super big news from BikePortland Headquarters… The sixth annual BikeCraft holiday gift bazaar is set for December 4th and 5th and our new venue this year is the Portland Design Works Mothership at 15 NE Hancock.

We’re really excited about this year’s event. We’ve got a brand new venue (a new space just off N. Williams bikeway and one block north of Broadway that was formerly the Department of Skateboarding skatepark), we’re open for business two full days, and we’ve got some very talented new artisans to share with you.

Will the walking movement ever be as successful as the bike movement?

Across the nation, biking advocates spent the last decade winning. And walking advocates have spent the last decade noticing.

Pedestrians may be “the club everyone belongs to but no one joins,” as a foot-traffic activist once lamented. But here in Portland, where the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition and Bicycle Transportation Alliance were incorporated within nine months of each other in 1991 and 1992, we tend to put a lot of faith in walking.

Oregon coast bike shop wins 2010 National Bicycle Travel Award

Bike Newport, an independent bike shop based in Newport, Oregon has been named the winner of a 2010 National Bicycle Travel Award by the Adventure Cycling Association.

Bike Newport has received the Sam Braxton Bike Shop Award for “incredible services and amenities that they offer bicycle tourists on the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route.” This is the first time since the awards were first given in 2003 that a shop on the West Coast has taken home the honors.

The Oregonian Editorial Board published a timely piece in today’s paper about the need for all of us who drive to take stock of our actions and do a better job looking out for people walking and biking on our roads. Here’s the opening:

Hey, you.

You need to have a “full and frank” conversation with yourself this evening. Looking in the mirror, you the driver ought to give you the walker a piece of your mind, and then switch roles.

Quite simply, both of you — and all of us — need to do a better job of paying attention. This year is shaping up as a terrible one for Oregon pedestrians.

Family Fun Bike Ride Plans Tour de Pie

Portland, OR — November 9, 2010 — The Thanksgiving holiday is all about gathering with friends and family, giving thanks for our blessings, and eating pie. Lots of pie. Portland’s monthly family fun bike ride will celebrate these traditions with a “Tour de Pie” in close-in SE.

The Kidical Mass Tour de Pie will be a rolling exploration of southeast Portland’s pie establishments. Stops are not yet finalized, but will likely include pizza pie, fried pie, and of course the traditional baked-in-a-flaky-crust pumpkin pie.
