Your one-week warning to create Pedalpalooza rides is … right now

pp2015

It’s coming!

Portland’s annual bike fun festival Pedalpalooza begins three weeks from today, and that means this: The deadline for getting a Pedalpalooza ride into the Portland Mercury’s printed ride calendar is one week from today.

Anyone can create a ride, and 87 have been created so far for the 24-day festival. To get into the Merc (as well as the definitive online calendar on shift2bikes.org) you can use the simple event form linked from the top of the calendar.

Here are a few highlights from the schedule so far:

GOAT-A-PALOOZA – Saturday, June 6, 1-5 p.m.
Bike tour of goats in the city! Are you goat-curious? We’ll visit a few different goat “ranches/farms” and see what it’s like to own goats in Portland. Meet at Unthank Park in N Portland, ride will end in SE, near Foster and 205.

At die-in, ODOT says it’s already doing its best to improve street safety

The protest was organized after a man biking across Powell Boulevard lost a leg in a collision with a turning pickup truck.
(Photos: M.Andersen/BikePortland unless noted)

About two dozen people lay in the one-way street outside the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Portland regional headquarters Wednesday afternoon in a mostly silent demonstration in support of safety improvements on Portland’s urban highways.

Most had biked to the spot; some lay their bicycles beside them. Others had walked; one said he’d walked downtown from North Portland.

Some were children. Some wore fake blood made from ketchup. One had brought a stack of signs: “Oregon Department of Traumatic Injury.”

City hires project manager for high-profile downtown protected bike lane project

The project management gig that one local planning pro has referred to as the “job of the year” has been filled.

Rick Browning, an architect and urban designer with a long history in Portland, will start work May 28 on a federally funded project that’s widely expected to implement the first substantial protected bike lanes in downtown Portland — indeed, some of the only low-stress bike infrastructure in downtown, which has by far the city’s highest concentration of bike commuters.

The $6.6 million Central City Multimodal Safety Project might also look for ways to improve the awkward bike connections to bridges like the Burnside, Steel and Hawthorne or even crossings of Interstate 405 to the west.

As it has been in other U.S. cities over the last few years, the downtown protected bike lanes would be a companion project to a planned bike sharing system that the city continues to say will launch in 2016.
