MAX train hits bicyclist in Gresham

Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on June 25th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Just got this from a reliable source:

“A MAX train hits a bicyclist in front of Gresham’s City Hall this evening. TriMet officials say two bicyclists admit they were trying to “beat the train”. The first cyclist made it — the second was struck by the front of the train. The victim, who was female, was alert and talking before she was taken to the hospital.”

Geez. What is it with cyclists running into MAX trains? Remember this incident back in May?

Watch your local news at 11 for more on the story (I’m going to bed).

"...Two cyclists rode north on Northwest Eastman Parkway, around the gates blocking the street, and the woman was struck by a westbound train just before 6:30 p.m., said Peggy LaPoint, a TriMet spokewoman..."

"...Rocky Yun, 23, of Gresham was nearby when the accident happened. Yun, who said he is training to be a firefighter, reported the woman had abrasions on her right shoulder and said her back hurt, but otherwise she appeared okay. The woman was wearing headphones at the time of the accident, he said..."

Good god. Was she shooting for a Darwin award or something?

Wearing headphones and trying to beat the train.
    Brilliant.

More likely trying to follow her boyfried, who was shooting for a Darwin award, but was just a little faster than she was!

Just goes to solidify the public opinion that all cyclists are suicidal idjits who are too poor and/or stupid to drive a car.

    Dang it.

Injuries sometimes cure stupidity. Fatalities always do. Glad the cyclist wasn't killed, but I hope she takes her cue from my first statement and not the second.

What does poverty have to do with willfully dodging a lowered gate in an attempt to beat a train? My guess is that these folks were of the "danger? laws? I'm too *cool*/*hip*/etc. for that!" mindset so common with the mildly privileged upper middle class. Ten bucks says those headphones were hooked to an iPod. :P

Considering the circumstance, the nouns are reversed in respect to the verb in the headline. One subject had a choice regarding the "hit"; the other did not.
