Business forum will focus on Portland’s bike industry

Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on April 2nd, 2007 at 5:00 am

As part of their Ambassadors Program, the Portland Development Commission will hold a forum to introduce Portland’s bicycle industry to the business community.

Cycle Oregon day 1 into Heppner
Jonathan Nicholas will moderate.

The event is slated for this Wednesday (4/4) at the Multnomah Athletic Club. It will be a panel discussion moderated by Oregonian columnist and Cycle Oregon founder Jonathan Nicholas. Here’s the verbage from the official invite:

Portland has a gold rating as a Biking Friendly Community –and it’s not just about the riders. Frame builders, suppliers, apparel manufacturers, component designers and others are developing the cycling industry’s potential as an economic driver for the region. We’ve asked representatives from the array of cycling-related businesses to provide a closer look at this exciting, emerging industry cluster.

Expected panelists include:

Mia Birk
Mia Birk of Alta Planning.

This will be a great opportunity for the local business community to meet and get educated about the many bicycle-related companies and businesses in Portland.

Sounds interesting. You've listed the panelists but I'm curious what other business members might be attending?

Some (that's "some" underscored) members of the business community don't yet have an understanding of the positive role of bicycles in the community. They see only conflict between bikes and trucks (e.g. in industrial areas). If this event can also help open their eyes to some of the business benefits and help them be more open towards bikes as transportation, that would be great.

"Where can I get one of the shirts Jonathan Nicholas is wearing?"

He got that shirt at the BikeCraft holiday bazaar in 2005. It was made by Portland crafter-superstar Justa Louise-Phillips. She reads the site and perhaps she'll chime in with her contact info...Justa?
