Smith, Hales asked about bicycling goals at City Club debate

Hales and Smith at City Club today.

Mayoral candidates Jefferson Smith and Charlie Hales shared their visions at a City Club debate at the Governor Hotel in Portland today. The debate was moderated by Tracy Barry of KGW-TV. Transportation came up several times during the debate, and one of Barry’s questions asked specifically about our bicycling goals.

Here’s the question she posed:

The current City Council has committed Portland to pursuing policies that will lead to 25% of all the trips within the city to be made by bicycles and 25% by public transportation by 2030. Is this a realistic goal? And what will you do in the next four years to advance it; especially in light of tight budgets that have curtailed mass transit and may actually pit bicyclists against motorists in the quest for infrastructure improvements?

Cross Crusade series kicks off Sunday

Cross Crusade #1 Alpenrose-42-42

Sunday!
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)

The Cross Crusade race series (brought to us by River City Bicycles), the grand-daddy of them all, is set for another wild kickoff event this Sunday at Alpenrose Dairy in Portland’s southwest hills. Last year nearly 1,500 people showed up to race at the Crusade opener, which makes it one of the largest cyclocross races (in terms of participation) in the world. With record field sizes at races so far this season, official are expecting another massive turnout.

Keeping with their fun, irreverent, and creative traditions, the theme of this year’s Crusade is “Through the Ages.” Event promoters mailed out a poster/brochure to past racers this week that included a hilarious mock-up of the famous Washington Crossing the Delaware painting by Emanuel Leutze. The mock-up is called Cyclocrossing the Delaware and the figures in the painting are organizers and volunteers from the Crusade’s producers, Vivo Productions. Crusade director Brad Ross plays the role of Washington.

Check it out (and yes, that’s a keg in the river)…

TriMet will take ‘Be Seen Be Safe’ message to the streets in November

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

TriMet plans to change things up a bit with their annual “Be Seen, Be Safe” promotion. This year, instead of the hi-vis clothing fashion show they’ve held at Pioneer Courthouse Square in years past, they’ll have “street teams” taking the message directly to the people. With the theme of, “Taking safety to the streets,” TriMet says the campaign will focus, “on walkers and bike riders, but also reminds drivers to be especially attentive in the dark and on the lookout for those on foot and on bike.”

TriMet says the street teams will, “be out interact with the public encouraging them to wear bright clothing, reflective gear or take other precautions to stay safe in the dark.” They’ll be at work during the evening rush hour at transit centers, high-crash corridors, and so on. Check out Metro staffer Dan Kaempff below in full reflective gear…
