Westside transportation pro will lead new Washington Park access group
The director of one of the region’s older transportation nonprofits is moving to one of the region’s newest.
Heather McCarey announced Wednesday that she’ll be leaving the Westside Transportation Alliance to become executive director of the newly formed Washington Park Transportation Management Association, which will focus on improving bike, transit and carpool travel options to Washington Park.
Both organizations are chartered by local governments to reduce auto travel by making it easier for people to reach their destinations by walking, biking, or taking public transportation.
The Westside TMA seeks to improve non-auto travel options throughout Washington County and is funded by a federally funded grant administered by Metro and voluntary dues from Washington County employers. The new Washington Park TMA will be funded by a similar Metro grant plus auto parking fees from people who bring autos to visit the park and its tenants: the Oregon Zoo, World Forestry Center, Portland Children’s Museum, Portland Japanese Garden and Hoyt Arboretum.
Man recovering after serious injury collision on SE Division/122nd – UPDATED
Coder wanted to help with stolen bike recovery software
The note below is from Bryan Hance, the Portland resident who created stolenbicycleregistry.com and who created the engine that runs the BikePortland Stolen Bike Listings. Bryan’s system works; but he needs help making it even better and to create code that can be used by other blogs. See his posting below and drop in a line if you know someone who’s interested…
Man hit while biking on Fremont remains hospitalized
26-year-old Dave Collins is lucky to be alive after being dragged 25 under a van driven by a man who made a dangerous — and illegal — left turn and collided with him on Monday.
After speaking with a police officer at the scene of the collision, we initially reported that Collins’ injuries were minor. The officer made it seem like it was a miraculous situation and he told me he had chatted with Dave and joked with him. But yesterday I saw a photo of Collins tweeted by his employer, PDX Pedicab, and realized he was far from “fine”. The photo shows Collins laying on a hospital bed, completely bandaged up.
The photo was taken by the owner of PDX Pedicab, Kyle Kautz. He put me in touch with Dave yesterday.
Reader takes action, gets stolen bike back
Whoever got this silver Specialized stolen yesterday, we have some good news.
This just in from reader Chris K.:
I was riding a block from the office yesterday when I saw the bike and recognized it as my coworkers. Followed to dude to a stop light and told him it was my friends and that I was going to get it back. He argued for a while while I was on the phone with the cops but eventually threw it down and walked away when he realized I was serious. The look on her face was priceless, when I carried the bike back into the office. That’s two recovered bikes for me this summer!
In new ad, Scion sees bike riders as obstacles in a fight
in a fight you must win, says a Scion ad.
Toyota-owned car brand Scion has unveiled a new commercial for their latest model. In an urban setting, they equate driving with a boxing match where the car is dubbed “King” of the road. Unfortunately, Scion includes a scene with people riding bicycles and refers to them as “obstacles” and then shows the cars zoom by them dangerously — all in an effort to “roll on to victory with the path of least resistance.”

Careless driving to blame for death of woman in SE Division crosswalk
The Portland Police Bureau have given the driver of a school bus two citations for her role in a collision that killed a 43-year-old woman who was walking across a southeast Portland street.
Renee Bates was walking on SE Division with her husband Shawn Bates on Tuesday afternoon when they attempted to walk eastbound across SE 148th (from the northwest corner). At the same time, 55-year-old Billie Jean Neel was attempting to make a right turn onto Division from 148th. Neel failed to operate her bus safely and ran over the Bates couple. Shawn was not seriously hurt but Renee died from her injuries later that day in the hospital.
Portland Streetcar will give free rides during Broadway Bridge closure
The impending closure of the sidepaths on the Broadway Bridge next week has started a lot of discussions about how the Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) handles traffic mitigation during construction. We have reported on the bicycling aspect of the closure; but many people are now realizing that it’s people who usually walk across the bridge that will most impacted. Unlike people riding bikes, they are highly unlikely to simply take the lane and the detour over to the Steel Bridge is likely a deal-breaker for those on foot.
Many walkers will likely hop on the new streetcar line. If they do, why not make it free? That’s the idea put forward last night at the Multnomah County Bicycle and Pedestrian Citizens Advisory Committee (MCBPCAC). One member of that committee, Bicycle Transportation Alliance advocate Carl Larson, has asked (via email) Portland Streetcar Inc. to give free rides to everyone during the closure period. Here’s a snip from Larson’s email:
“Mistakes” aside, city says Alta’s labor issues won’t affect Portland Bike Share
Alta Bicycle Share Vice President Mia Birk acknowledged Wednesday that “we definitely make mistakes,” but that her fast-growing company is learning from its possible violation of federal labor rules and taking steps to avoid future wage issues.
Meanwhile, Portland city lawyers say the “prevailing wage” law that Alta may have run afoul of in Washington, D.C., which requires government contractors to be paid at higher than market price, won’t affect Portland’s forthcoming bike share system because it applies only to direct contracts with the District of Columbia or federal government itself.
A Big Bike Weekend Event Guide
We don’t usually capitalize our headlines; but there’s so much going on this weekend I felt it was necessary. Of course, as Murphy’s Law would have it, I’ll be out of town enjoying some of the best bikeways in North America in Sunriver with my family this weekend and next, so I hope everyone has a great time without me!
And by all means, if you attend any of the awesome events below, feel free to send in photos and recaps so we can consider posting some of them here on the Front Page for everyone to enjoy.
Strap in, there’s a lot going on…
