Youth racing program ‘PDX Devo’ off to a fast start
The PDX Devo Junior Cycling Team isn’t even one year old; but it’s already showing very promising signs of life. While its overarching goal is to find and develop tomorrow’s racing superstars, PDX Devo’s more immediate mission to “create lifelong cyclists and good citizens through competitive cycling.”
PDX Devo was founded as a nonprofit last spring by Portlanders Russell Cree and Brian Gerow, two men with deep connections to the local bike industry and racing scene. “I started racing bikes in high school and it’s given me so much in life,” says Cree, who’s now 37, still racing, and is the owner of Upper Echelon Fitness in northwest Portland. “It’s a lifestyle and culture that in incredible. It has literally been the driving force in my life from my teenage years to now.”
Beaverton PD launches distracted driving diversion program
The Beaverton Police Department wants to increase public awareness about distracted driving and especially the dangers of using a cell phone while driving. As of today, when people get stopped by Beaverton PD officers for violating Oregon’s cell phone law, they will be given the option of going through a Distracted Driving Diversion Program.
Here’s more from Beaverton PD Public Information Officer Mike Rowe:
“This new program provides drivers who have been stopped and issued a citation for using a mobile communication device an opportunity to attend an educational class. The class has an emphasis on distracted driving with a focus on the use of a cell phone. If you choose to take the Distracted Driving Diversion class, pay the diversion fee of $85.00, and successfully complete the class. The case will be dismissed and there will be no conviction on your driving record.”
British architects, designers to begin high-profile tour in Portland
(Photo: Greg Bartley/Portland to Portland)
At the end of this month, Portland will be invaded by members of what London Mayor Boris Johnson recently proclaimed as, “a stonking charity initiative.” He was referring to Portland to Portland, a group of British architects, planners, and designers who plan to ride 4083 miles from Portland Oregon to Portland Place London to soak up cycling solutions.
The 14 riders (2 women and 12 men) have one goal for their journey: To learn how cities are responding to the urban bicycling renaissance, or what they’ve coined as the “cyclization” of transportation. In each of the 12 cities they stop in (including the U.S., Ireland, Wales, and England), the riders will meet up with peers in similar professions to trade notes and discuss best practices. Here’s more from their website:

Reader Story: Portland and livable streets: We’re just getting started
This article was sent in by Chris Anderson, a 33-year-old northeast Portland resident who lives in the Concordia neighborhood. When he’s not riding his e-assist cargo bike with his family he writes mobile phone software for Couchbase.

I’m a family biker and a tech entrepreneur who recently returned to Portland. I’ve written this to share my perspective on livable streets, and I’m hoping to meet other people who are interested in the future of Portland. (If this describes you please reach out to me on Twitter @jchris or Facebook.)
A little background: I’m a co-founder of a database technology startup (although at 100 people and healthy revenues, we are starting to outgrow that designation). Reed College brought me to Portland in the late 90’s but I was pulled away for a few years to start the company. Now I’m back, and just joined the Portland Business Alliance, and hope to get active with the City Club and other citizen forums.

Racers tackle Rose Garden Circuit race in Washington Park
The rain came into play once again last night at the Rose Garden Circuit Race, which held in Portland’s Washington Park. Thus, the streak for wet weather over the past two seasons of the series is still without end. The wet road made for some slippery turns, but this week’s race had more upright bikes at the finish and few if any injuries to riders. This is in contrast to last week’s opening event, which saw its fair share of crashes.
