Riding along with Paul Cole: Short but sweet in the city
Welcome to the latest installment of our Ride Along series, which is sponsored by MetroMile.
Prepare to be envious of Paul Cole’s commute. This 29-year-old northwest Portland resident has a commute that’s only about 1.5 miles, most of it on relatively low-stress streets, and he also gets to ride over the Willamette River every day.
Cole, who works in marketing for a software firm, lives in an apartment in Old Town at NW 5th and Everett. He moved to Portland from St. Augustine Florida in 2007 and hadn’t ridden a bike since childhood when he moved here. One day he stumbled into Bike Gallery during one of their big sales and bought a bike. “I was kind of nervous at first,” he recalled, as he packed his panniers and got ready for work (he stores his bike in his apartment).

Biking wins big in Metro’s $2.1 million in ‘Regional Travel Options’ grants
a Central Campus Cycle Station that will be
even bigger and better than their Harrison
St Bike Garage shown here.
Metro just announced their grant awards for the Regional Travel Options program. The program, which funds, “projects to reduce the number of people driving alone, improve air quality and address community health issues,” doled out $2.1 million to 14 projects throughout the region. Portland won big with several important local (and bike-related) projects getting a slice of the pie. Check out some of the winners below…
Swan Island TMA – Grant award: $123,316
Go Swan Island! is a combination of programs tailored to Swan Island’s four largest employer sites and to Portland Community College’s new Swan Island Workforce Training Center. The project will use marketing strategies and new technologies to increase carpooling and capitalize on anticipated Swan Island business investments. These approaches will promote new travel options programs and $5 million in new bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
PSU Cycling Team poised for first-ever conference title
The Portland State University Cycling Team is rolling toward their best year ever. With a potent mix of talent, sheer numbers, and team chemistry, they sit atop the rankings of the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference — ahead of such powerhouse programs like University of Oregon, University of Washington, and Oregon State.
I caught up with the team last Friday as they loaded their team trailer and vans to head to North Bend, Washington for a trio of races hosted by the University of Washington.
First look at ‘Biking Portland’ guide book
With the release of Biking Portland: 55 Rides from the Willamette Valley to Vancouver, anyone interested in discovering great rides in and around Portland has another excellent resource to turn to.
Written by Alaska native Owen Wozniak and published by The Mountaineers Books, Biking Portland offers much more than cue sheets, maps, and ideas on places to ride. Wozniak has a deep appreciation for natural areas (his day job is project manager for the Trust for Public Lands, a non-profit conservation group) as well as the metro area’s history, geography and politics. “I’ve tried to sneak as much of that stuff between the covers of a biking guide book as possible,” he says.
“I think it’s a great fit because a bike is actually a great way to experience some of the more wonky stuff (urban planning, environmental conservation) that makes our region special.”
