Portland-based Universal Cycles has donated $15,000 to the Northwest Trail Alliance to help in their ongoing mission to build more mountain bike trails in the Portland metro area.
The donation will go towards the local matching funds required for a a $55,248 grant the NWTA received last fall. That grant, which the NWTA was awarded through the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) will be used to purchase trail building equipment.
The NWTA is currently involved with trail building projects in many areas including Stub Stewart State Park, Forest Park, Cascade Locks, Sandy Ridge, and others. The RTP grant and this new $15,000 donations from Universal will allow them to buy a “Ditch Witch” machine and other tools to complement the ST240 trail building machine they purchased back in 2010.
“Through this donation, NWTA will be able to construct sustainable trails including the forthcoming improvements to Fire Lane 5 in Forest Park,” said NWTA President Jon Pheanis in a statement today. “It takes a community to build trails and we are grateful for such an extremely generous contribution and partner.”
In addition to the $15,000 donation, Universal Cycles will host a fundraiser night for the NWTA this Wednesday, December 12th from 5 – 7:00 pm. Come and enjoy a few drinks and learn about all the great trail stewardship and construction going on in our area.

This is just another reason why I shop at Universal Cycles.
This is why I shop Universal Cycles even though I no longer live in PDX!
Thank you Universal!

I guess I missed the news that the stolen ST240 was recovered…

I seem to recall an arrest later on, but I can’t find the details, offhand.
oh, that’s why I couldn’t find it, no mention of ST240 in the article… I wish BP had a real search engine…
Way to go Universal!
Great job Universal Cycles. I think I will make it a point to go buy a Christmas present at their shop next weekend.
Way to support the local community Universal!
This is why I have spent about $400+ there this month on mountain bike parts and clothing for bike commuting. Thank you for the local support, Universal.
Thanks guys! This is what makes a great business- investing profit into improving the local community. It helps people to enjoy healthy lifestyles while also creating more customers by increasing the desirability of biking. Win- Win!
I too tend to fequent Universal Cycles (perhaps more often than i should). It’s great to see our money going back towards the community.
Hell yeah UC! Been supporting them for many many many years… Once I moved to PDX a couple years ago, (had no idea they were located here) it was like a bike shop dream come true!
Hope the ST240 gets put to some really good LOCAL use!
It already has been put to local use. (ST240)
You just may not know about it….
Thanks UC! Just fantastic…
Awesome Universal! You’ll keep getting my business, that’s for sure.
Way to go NWTA, keeping the PUMP legacy alive!
