Brand: GT
Model: Timberline
Color:Green
Stolen in Portland, OR
Stolen:2012-08-28
Stolen From: 4th Avenue Building @ Portland State University. Entrance near 4th and Harrison.
Neighborhood: PSU Campus
Owner: Weston Wedding
OwnerEmail: wes@wawco.com
Description: Both pedals had loose screws so pedaling was sort of creaky/crackly. Chainwheel is off-kilter slightly so the chain will rarely slip when the rear sprokets are in high gear. Chain can’t really sit on the largest cog of the chainwheel without slipping or popping off.

Both tires are “Serpa” brand “Drifter” tires; all black.

Seat is in really bad shape but had a cheap gel seat cover added, which is still in good shape. Seat itself has tape wrapped around it.

Some of the screws in the pedals have broken off completely, splitting open the stems.

Chain and lock tended to be wrapped around the top tube during rides so there was a lot of knicks and chipped paint on the top tube and a bit on the down tube.

Handle bars were a longhorn style, black rubber.

Gear shifters needed some adjusting; the orange gear indicators did not align very well for the chainwheel.

Bicycle license tax, separated bikeways in Oregon’s 1901 ‘Bicycle Path Bill’

“… it being the object and intent of this act to provide for pedestrians and bicycles a highway separate from that used by teams and horsemen.”— Excerpt from House Bill 63

The more I read about Oregon’s tenth governor, T.T. Geer, the more intriguing this man becomes.

As we shared back in 2009, Governor Geer was the man who put bicycling on the map in Oregon at the turn of the 20th century. He served as governor from 1899 through 1903 — right in the midst of what many consider the golden age of bicycling in America. Today I came across an email from reader Larry H. that included a PDF of a piece of legislation Geer pushed through in 1901 known as House Bill 63; also known as, “Oregon’s Bicycle Path Bill.”

I knew Geer was bike-oriented, but never realized just how broad his bike policies were until I read the text of HB 63 this morning. I found it fascinating. Many of the provisions included in the bill — a tax on bicycle riders, ongoing revenue for infrastructure, and so on — are things we are still debating 111 years later.

Four years later, large trucks still use SE Caruthers bike lanes as loading zones

trucks near Springwater entrance-2.jpg

This photo, taken in July 2008, shows how large trucks use the bike lanes on SE Caruthers as loading zones. This practice forces people walking and biking between the Esplanade and the Springwater paths to use the middle of the roadway. Unfortunately, the problem persists. (This photo is looking north on SE Caruthers toward SW 4th.)

Help get the bicycle perspective on new Police Bureau Training Advisory Council

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Would you like to see the police utilize bicycle patrols more often? Are you concerned about how the PPB handles marches and protests? The City of Portland and the Portland Police Bureau is forming a new group of citizens to provide input into their training programs. Since there are many ways bicycling intersects with police training, this might be something worth considering for some of you.

Check out more information from the official announcement below…

“The Training Advisory Council will provide ongoing advice to the Chief of Police on its efforts to continuously improve training standards, practices, and outcomes by examining training content, delivery, tactics, policy, tools, equipment and facility use…

The Police Bureau Training Division is a crucial piece of our public safety strategy for the City of Portland. Our Training Division protocols and process both outfit officers with the tools they need to keep our city safe and healthy, and also reflect the values of our community. We are one of the first jurisdictions in the country to establish a Training Advisory Council of citizens to increase accountability for police training and to provide recommendations to the Chief of Police…”

I’m a bit late posting this, so you have only until August 31st to fill out and complete the application form. Download the PDF here.

The Monday Roundup

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

This week’s Monday Roundup is brought to you by the 10th annual Harvest Century, a benefit for Community Vision, coming September 30th.

Here’s the news and other interesting stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– A surgeon in Baton Rouge, Louisiana got caught in gridlock while driving into work. Being late wasn’t an option, so she called a friend a few blocks away and borrowed a bike to pedal the rest of the way. A kids bike. Check out this awesome story.

– Leaked communications from the New Orleans Police Department show that officers were ordered to meet quotas for the number of people on bikes they stopped while on duty.

NPR‘s All Things Considered discusses the practice of setting up ghost bike memorials, speaking with Ryan Nuckle who helped found New York City’s Ghost Bike Project in 2005.

– The 7th Annual Brompton World Championships was held this past week in the UK and a new record was set in the event’s main competition.
