Opinion: Licensing debate should focus on reform, not revenge

Bike traffic on N. Interstate

Once again we find ourselves in the midst of the big debate: Should bike riders be required to have a license?

This time it comes up following a decision by the City of Portland to partially close N. Wheeler Ave. The closure prevents all vehicles (not just cars and trucks) from turning right from Broadway and it was done to stop a scary history of right-hook collisions. Bob Huckaby, who owns a business that uses Wheeler for access, was opposed to the closure from the get-go. He saw the move as an unfair penalty on people who drive. In his mind, the right-hook problem exists only because people do not come to a complete stop when bicycling down N. Flint Ave., which is just a few yards upstream from Wheeler.

I agree with Bob. It’s unfair when the actions of one road user negatively impact another. But while I share his concerns about the issue, I disagree that pointing fingers at bicycle operators and calling for mandatory licenses will achieve the goal. Let’s put our energy towards reform, not revenge.

Check out Sparky’s Pizza’s new delivery vehicle

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Another Portland business has realized the awesome role cargo bikes can play in their bottom line (and their brand/reputation). Sparky’s Pizza on Belmont (they have seven other locations) now has a fully decked-out Madsen cargo bike as one of it’s delivery vehicles…

And of course Sparky’s is far from the only pizza joint in town that uses bikes. Old Town Pizza (a fantastic BikePortland advertiser!) uses bakfiets-style bikes to deliver pizza and beer. Pizza Schmizza has a cycle-truck at their downtown location…And I’m sure there are others.

Hat tip to our friend and cargo bike lover/promoter/advocate Ethan Jewett for finding this.

The Lumberyard bike park launches high school scholarship program

Good clean fun.

The Lumberyard Bike Park has announced a new partnership with the Madison South Neighborhood Association to fund free passes for local high school students.

The Lumberyard is located on NE 82nd Ave, right across the street from Madison High School. At the suggestion of people in the neighborhood, The Lumberyard has set up a special fund that anyone can contribute to. As the fund fills up, The Lumberyard will set aside park passes and admission to after school programs at no cost for selected Madison High School students. The Lumberyard says they’ll match all the funds raised by the community, and Madison High administrators and teachers will choose students based on factors including attendance and academic performance.
