Cycling soccer fans could hold the key to whether or not the upcoming Portland Timbers match at Jeld-Wen Field (formerly PGE Park) ends up in a traffic snarl in downtown Portland

On April 14th, the Timbers, hold their first home match as a Major League Soccer franchise. The newly renovated arena has a capacity of 20,000 fans (up from 16,000) and it’s located in a dense part of downtown Portland. With auto parking at a premium, the City of Portland and the Timbers are doing everything they can to encourage folks to get to the stadium without a car.

Bicycling cop, assault suspect sit down, agree to drop charges – UPDATED

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“It was great for both of us; he’s not in his steel/glass cocoon, I’m not on my bike… looking at this guy, it was therapeutic. You kind of humanize each other. He’s looking at me as the guy he almost ran over and I’m looking at him as just a normal guy. Not a motorist, not a cyclist.”
— Sgt. Joe Santos, PPB

Two weeks ago we reported on a case of alleged road rage involving a man on a bicycle in Northwest Portland. That man was off-duty police officer Sgt. Joe Santos. He was biking into work when he was nearly run over and then allegedly assaulted by Larry Fornshell. The PPB arrested Fornshell shortly thereafter for hit and run and attempted assault.

It seemed like the classic bike vs. car road rage incident; but this one just happened to involve a Portland Police officer on the bike-side of the equation. For that reason alone, the story spurred considerable discussion in the community (233 comments at last count).

Yesterday, Fornshell’s son-in-law Gordon Neitling left a comment about the incident, saying that the two parties had met and that had both admitted some degree of fault. Neitling also referred to Sgt. Santos’ conduct as being much more aggressive than the PPB let on. Here’s a snip from his comment:

A “long, slow slog”: A citizen’s view of the Sullivan’s Gulch project

Last week I directed your attention to the Sullivan’s Gulch project. I wanted more people to be aware of a meeting held last night by the Portland Parks Board which included the project on its agenda.

The Sullivan’s Gulch project (calling it a “trail” is a misnomer), which would connect East Portland to the Willamette River along I-84, is exactly the kind of investment we need to make if we want to live up to our green transportation rhetoric and meet our lofty carbon emission and bike usage goals.

Reader Carl Alviani went to the meeting last night and I asked him to share what he heard. Read Carl’s report on the meeting below (emphasis mine):

627 people on bikes in just 2 hours on N. Williams Ave

Traffic on Williams.

On Tuesday evening the Bicycle Transportation Alliance set up a “Recharge Station” on the corner of N. Williams Avenue and Tillamook. They offered free bike repair and other goodies while they asked folks to become members and get involved with local bike advocacy. They also took the opportunity to count the number of people that passed by on bicycles.

The result? In just two hours (from 5:00 – 7:00 pm) 627 people rolled by on bikes.

Bike commuters stranded when I-5 bridge gates malfunction

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

[NOTE: Please see this major update to this story.]

Gates closed for over 30 minutes
yesterday evening.

Last night, the gates on the sidewalk of the Interstate Bridge over the Columbia River between Portland and Vancouver malfunctioned, staying closed for over 30 minutes. People on bicycles trying to commute across the river were forced to either turn back or, in some cases, they rode onto I-5 to get around the gates.

According to Todd Boulanger, a former City of Vancouver Transportation Planner, the malfunction occurred at around 6:00 pm. He contacted us last night to share the news and an email he wrote to ODOT and transportation staff from the cities of Portland and Vancouver.

Here’s the email:

Editorial: GOP budget goes down same old road on transportation spending

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward
A (small) part of traffic-1

(Photo © J. Maus)

It’s got to be pretty disappointing to transportation advocates that after years and years of beating the drum about the truth behind infrastructure spending and extolling the virtues of bicycling, the Republican party is still proposing the same old, cars-only approach.

The GOP’s budget (released yesterday) is titled the “Path to Prosperity,” but strangely it proposes taking the same path that has led to nothing but financial ruin when it comes to transportation spending.
