Advisory: Eastbank Esplanade to close for five days

The Bureau of Environmental Services has just announced that the Eastbank Esplanade will be closed to all users for five days starting on Monday, April 18th. More details in the press release below:

Five-day closure of the Eastbank Esplanade near OMSI

Environmental Services will close the Eastbank Esplanade next week between OMSI and the Hampton Opera Center. The closure on Monday, April 18 will allow work crews to safely dismantle and remove a conveyor erected over the path in 2006. The closure will last through Friday, April 22.

Signs will direct cyclists and pedestrians to use SE Water Avenue to detour around the closure.

The conveyor carried soil and rocks mined during the East Side Big Pipe project to barges in the Willamette River. Barges shipped about 550,000 cubic yards of material to Ross Island for use in the lagoon restoration project.

The city completed mining the nearly six-mile-long, 22-foot wide East Side Big Pipe in October 2010. Environmental Services will activate the tunnel this winter to collect sewage and stormwater for transport to the city’s main wastewater treatment plant.

Completing the East Side Big Pipe will reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) events to the Willamette River from about 100 per year to an average of four events each winter and one event every three summers.

Green Gear Cycling (Bike Friday) is an internationally recognized manufacturer of high performance folding bicycles for traveling and utilitarian/commuting use. Many of our designs are the market benchmark product. We employ lean manufacturing techniques (Toyota Production System) to hand fabricate the bicycles here in Eugene OR. We practice open book financial management.

We are looking for that special someone to join our team. Bike Friday is a mass customizer that relies on the Inventory Control / Kitter person to maintain accurate inventory and prepare the bicycle component kits for production.

Requisite Skills:
Hyper organized- You will be responsible for receiving all of the bicycle components into inventory and kitting all of the bicycles entering production. This must be done in a timely and organized manner. Done correctly, production sails through bikes; done improperly, the production is hobbled to a standstill.
Problem solving skills- Half of your time should be used for kitting bikes; the other half is for answering bells, receiving components into inventory, general inventory control, and problem solving/ improvements of the area.
Strong critical thinking skills.
Previous inventory experience is quite helpful.
Strong attention to detail.
A good memory will make the job easier and quicker.
Comfortable with computers and business systems.
A firm believer of the concept of continuous improvement with experience that reflects this.
Employ Lean Manufacturing Just-in-Time Inventory Management techniques. This knowledge and application of techniques is preferred but can be learned.
Bicycle component experience or knowledge preferred but not required.

Police make arrest in fatal Molalla hit-and-run – Updated

Police arrested a 26-year old man this morning on charges related to the fatal hit-and-run crash on Highway 211 west of Molalla that occurred on March 22nd.

Jacob Croall turned himself in and was arrested at the office of his attorney in east Portland at 10:00 am this morning and he has been transported to the Clackamas County Jail. According to a statement by the Oregon State Police Croall has been charged with; Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver To Injured Persons (a Class B felony), and Tampering with Evidence (a Class A misdemeanor).

Portland Bicycle Advisory Committee April meeting agenda

Meet the Director
Tom Miller, recently appointed Director of the Bureau of Transportation, will fully take the reins on May 1st. Tom will discuss the opportunities offered to Portland by bicycle transportation and this thoughts about funding the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030. This will be a far-ranging discussion with plenty of opportunity for questions and response.

Bikeway Development Projects
Dan Layden, Capital Program Manager for PBOT will present on a cluster of capital projects intended to improve conditions on several bikeways identified in the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030 as “Major City Bikeways,” as well as other innovative treatments, including a two-way Holladay Street. Dan will brief the committee on progress to date. This will give the committee an opportunity to weigh in on these first projects intended to significantly upgrade long stretches of existing bikeways to conditions envisioned in the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030. Event Bicycle Parking
Sarah Figliozzi from PBOT will discuss the city’s efforts to provide event bicycle parking. She will present as a model the city’s efforts with the Timber’s. At their opening game up to 500 bicycle parking spaces will be provided.

Follow up: ODOT says I-5 bridge sidewalk gates didn’t malfunction

Yesterday we received information from a reader that the gates on the I-5 bridge sidewalk had malfunctioned, staying closed for over 30 minutes on Wednesday night and blocking access across the bridge for people on bikes and on foot.

That reader, Todd Boulanger, has since been contacted by Kimberly Dinwiddie at ODOT Community Affairs. Dinwiddie says the gate closure wasn’t a malfunction, but that bridge engineers decided to keep them closed due to a passing vessel and traffic on a railroad bridge downstream.
