New from Amsterdam: ‘Rain couture’

I got an interesting press release today from a company named Madame de Pe. They make “rain couture from Amsterdam, designed and tested on Dutch bicycles”. With the amount of rain we get here in Portland and the wide affection for Dutch bicycles, I was curious what you all might think. At about $300 per jacket, they’re not cheap (for comparison, a top-end Showers Pass is about $200).

Reader Seth Alford has been taking a lot of helmet cam video lately (his video of a TriMet bus rudely squeezing him out of a bike lane in Hillsdale garnered some attention). About a month ago, he waited over two minutes at the intersection of SW Laurelwood/Schools Ferry/Nicol (map) before his left turn light went green; and it likely triggered only after a car pulled up behind him.

Curious, Alford went onto the Washington County website to find information about bicycle detection at traffic signals. The County has a page that addresses the issue, and surprisingly, it includes the following official advice* (See update below — they’ve edited the site):

As tsunami waves begin to reach the Oregon Coast this morning, owners of the Bike Newport bike shop say they escaped the rising waters by sleeping in their shop overnight.

Elliot and Daniella Crowder’s shop won a national award as a haven for Oregon coast bike tourers last year because it has all the comforts of home. I bet they never thought they might be the ones who needed them. Reached on the phone this morning, Ms. Crowder says her family fled their sea-level home and spent the night in the shop.
