The Monday Roundup

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– It doesn’t often make the news, but every year, enough oil spills into the Niger Delta in Nigeria to dwarf the scope of the current oil spill off the U.S. coast.

– In Chicago, two young men have been found guilty of setting out, drunkenly, to intentionally run down people on bicycles, but received very light sentences.

– Some cities are using GPS technology to track stolen bikes, but in most places bike theft is still underreported and inconsistently addressed.

– Baltimore is considering a new zoning code that would encourage an increased number of urban farms.

Ride Report: SE Solar Tour

Reporter – Jeff Cropp
Ride Date – Monday, June 21, 2010
Ride Description

Ride Report
We had 25 riders for a short tour of solar homes in Inner Southeast Portland. We got to tour one home with a solar water heating system and another with a photovoltaic (solar electric) system. The riders got to learn all about how the technology works, how much it costs, and see different examples. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the tour will probably be repeated with the Easy Riders later in the summer.

Report: Momentum Meander

Ride Report
The ride got off to a pleasant start. It was a beeeeautiful day as we met under the Hawthorne bridge. We did indeed meander a little bit, but unfortunately, it did not last. Our fearless ride leader, representing Momentum magazine (sorry I did not get your name) took a spill. Murphy’s law dictated that a bungee would come loose from his front rack, which jammed in his front wheel. I did not see it happen, but I think he went endo. The front fork was toast, and the paramedics came to help out. He had a helmet, so that part was good; his shoulder seems to be messed up. He went to the hospital to have it checked out. He’s from Vancouver, B.C., so his bills are covered hopefully, anyway.

Bummer, it would have been a very nice meander around the bridges otherwise. Thanks, Momentum, for showing up, and for the great magazine.

Ride Report: CrankMyChain! Nooner

Reporter – Dan Kaufman
Ride Date – Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Ride Description

Ride Report
Wednesday’s show/ride met at the Lincoln Statue at the South Park Blocks combined with the Farmer’s Mkt Ride. The “in the flesh” riders were Rev Phil, Cranky Jay, Sherry, Coach Dan, Ron Richings, Scott (Farmer’s Mkt Ride leader), Kirsten Kaufman (aka bikerealtor), Lucas, Aidan & Arthur Kaufman, Claire, Jordan, Greg Wandering Yeti, Bob, Eric, Hillary and Myself. Virtual riders were Bob, Coach Dan, Scott Mizee, Jenny, Jen, Steve, Andy, and about 3500 other lurkers.

The weather was awesome. We headed down to salmon street springs, then over to Vera and then check out the Naked Bike ride start point to make sure it was clean (it was), then we headed back to Vera, we turned off the camera and then headed to the Peoples Market Street Party and then over to the Sprockettes Dance Party Field Day ride.

Here are links to (some of) the very raw (and sometimes rough) footage. It does not include the corresponding chat room text.

Huge crowds filled the streets to bask in the sun and the Sunday Parkways spirit yesterday. People walked and rolled on a seven-mile loop of carfree streets in North Portland that stretched from Piedmont, to the bluffs of Willamette Boulevard and north to Kenton Park.

It was the second of five Sunday Parkways the City of Portland has planned for this year (the next one is in East Portland on July 18th). Like we noted in our report on the Northeast edition last month, there were lots of kids and families out yesterday.
