PBOT asks for donations to keep Sunday Parkways alive
The second of five Sunday Parkways events happens this weekend and the City of Portland needs financial help from the community to keep them going.
A similar call for help went out last year when Sunday Parkways program manager Linda Ginenthal told us that “We know you don’t often receive requests like this from your City agencies. But Sunday Parkways isn’t business as usual.”
Multnomah County Bike Fair location announced!
Organizers of the Multnomah County Bike Fair — the event that marks the end of Pedalpalooza — have just announced its location.
This year’s MCBF will take place place this Sunday from 2:00 – 7:00pm on SE Alder Street between 12th and 14th (the southern end of the Washington High School lot). The location, date, and a few other key things about MCBF are different this year. Not only does the fair leave its former home of Colonel Summers Park on SE Belmont, but it’s on Sunday (instead of Saturday) and there won’t be a beer garden.
‘Safety’ concerns prompt biking ban in Colorado town
visitors to Black Hawk, CO.
(Photo: Bicycle Colorado)
As you probably have already heard, a small casino town in Colorado has passed – and is now enforcing – a ban on biking. The town of Black Hawk has drawn national attention for the ban and Colorado bike advocacy group Bicycle Colorado is mobilizing to have the law repealed.
The impetus behind the ban is a feeling by Black Hawk’s leaders that bike traffic simply gets in the way of its casino clientele — a clientele that has skyrocketed in numbers after a recent increase in the town’s betting limits.
I’ll repeat: This ban is not because the city of Black Hawk is concerned about the safety of people riding bikes, the ban was passed because bike traffic threatens the safety of motor vehicle traffic.

City Club, freeways, and the ‘monstrous problem’ of cars in 1960
“We should avoid putting all of our eggs in the freeway basket. In the long run, the most efficient mass transportation is by means other than private automobile… catering to the whims of the individual in his own automobile has proven to be an outrageously expensive luxury…”
— City Club of Portland, 1960
50 years ago this week, The City Club of Portland published a report that provides a window into the mood of our city toward transportation at the height of the automobile age.
The Report on Freeways Location was published by a five-member City Club committee on June 24th, 1960. The document was drafted in order to provide the State Highway Commission and city planners guidance to decide the best route for a future freeway that would pass through downtown.
1960 was just four years after the U.S. Congress passed the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act. Using gas tax revenue, the federal government offered to pay 90% of the tab for highway construction.
