Tonight: BikePortland.org Social Hour

The Lucky Lab’s awesome
bike rack awaits…
(Photo: Jonathan Maus)

Tonight (Friday) at the Lucky Lab (915 SE Hawthorne), myself and a few regular readers will get together for the first BikePortland.org Social Hour.

This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time and, after it was recently brought up in the comments yet again, reader “a.O” stepped up and reminded me to post about it.

The idea is to take the discussion offline and maybe make some connections with like-minded (or not) fellow readers. There’s certainly no shortage of topics to discuss these days.

So, if you’re one of the thousands who ride home on Hawthorne Blvd., feel free to stop in and say hi.

See you there!

Come meet the pompous d-bag you\’ve argued with so many times! I promise to be nice, even to Dabby!

I\’d really like to come to this, but I get off work right at 5 and wouldn\’t be able to show up until at least 5:20.

Think you might have the next one at, say, 6pm so those of us 9 to 5ers can make it for the whole thing?

Hollie, I\’m sure we all won\’t depart at 6 on the dot. I\’m in for more than a pint.

Hollie, thats what we call fashionably late.

I have to run around (okay, bike around) and pick up a few things, but I will try and duck out of work early and stop by.

I\’ll be there. The first couple pitchers are on me.

Haven\’t decided yet if I\’ll wear my helmet!

With any luck I\’ll be there. But I\’ll be leaving early to meet Steve Novick (running for Gordon Smith\’s senate seat) at Roots brewing.

Hmmm, this sounds like the start of a crawl.

Shoot. I\’d love to hit this, but we\’ve got \”family movie night\” planned already. Next time, fo\’ sho\’.

(maybe a little more advance notice…say, upcoming.org?)

Half of your bike friendly PDOT folks usually rendevous at the bike-friendly LL on early Friday evenings too, so you may see a few of them there too!

I’m a little torn. It’s kind of fun wondering if I’ll pick a.O out of a crowd someday. The guy stopped at a sign at an empty intersection… “rixtir, is that you?” Jessica Roberts, I don’t think that was you I pulled up alongside this morning at Ankey and Sandy, but I wanted to ask. Jonathan probably knows my face from Redwing and elsewhere, but not enough to put it with the screen name. With all the cyclists in Portland, I think I know 3 or 4 names.

I think I’m talking myself in to showing up.

Sorry that you can\’t make it Jessica. Maybe next time will work better for you.

Tonight, 5 to 6 works perfect for me. I\’ll get home before my duaghter goes to bed.

GadZ~!

I\’d really like to stop in and meet you guys, and it\’s right along my way home for the most part.

I\’ve got a pretty tight schedule though, I\’m afraid I have a bday party to get to.

If I don\’t make it in ya\’ll have fun!

thanks everyone for chiming in. sorry the 5-6 window is tight.

I want to keep it ending early so I can get home to my girls… it\’s been a(nother) long and stress-filled week.

this is definitely something we will do again. maybe tonight we can cement a regular date and time for the future.

come any time between 5 and 6 tonight…I\’ll save some peanuts for you.

and I didn\’t know about the Steve Novick event. maybe at 5:45 we can all walk over to Roots like we\’re the bike lobby or something!

Great Novick ad here with a news reporter embarrassing himself with a typical Fox News shtick.

Well, that was a good time! So great to put faces with names and see so concretely that this community is made up of really outstanding people. And some great discussion, from the state of the salmon to the referral, to the local bike economy, and to changing the status quo.

Still, there were so many folks I didn\’t get to talk to. Mia Burke was there, for example! Anyway, maybe Jonathan can lend his star power once a month and we can make it a regular thing.

Adams Carroll (News Intern)

Thanks everyone for coming tonight. Wish I could have stayed longer but it seemed like folks were having plenty of fun without me.

This was definitely a cool thing. I met many readers whom I only knew by screen names (encephalopath, geezer, joeb, special K, etc…), not to mention others like Matt Picio, a.O, Jessica Roberts, Dan Johnson (teknotus), Shannon, Julie, and many more.

the plan is to make this a bi-monthly affair… we\’re thinking 1st and 3rd Friday\’s of the month. And I will talk with the Lucky Lab to see about reserving the big room… we need more space next time!

stay tuned for the next one and I hope to meet more of you in the future.

Next time, name tags??

Damn – missed it! Can\’t wait to meet all you \”cranks\” at the next social hour. And Jessica, I love the name tag idea, but for the record, Krammer suggested it first for the good folks of NYC.

Dang! I tuned in day late and missed it. No, that\’s only half true. Even if I had known, it conflicted with a hot date.

Great idea! Another time?

I read it Saturday morning, it said \”Tonight\”, so I went. No cyclists !!

Oh well, next time. I had a beer and saluted you all, not a bicyclist in sight!!

I wish I had some more notice Jonathan I would have been there. Maybe the next time, announce it a day or two in advance.

I found out about it after it happened.
