Sellwood sewer construction will impact bike route

The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) issued a statement today that work on a sewer project will impact a popular bike route in the Sellwood area of Southeast Portland.

Their Sellwood Reliever Sewer project will take place along several points of SE Umatilla Street (from 19th westward), which is a key connector across a gap in the Springwater Corridor Trail.

Project official David Allred from BES says,

“electronic signs are now up at SE 6th at Umatilla and at SE Linn at 19th advising bicyclist of the construction…For obvious safety reasons, we are urging bike traffic to use alternate routes, such as SE Spokane.”

The project, which is part of the larger Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project, will take several months to complete. Below is a map of the project area.

The sign at SE 6th and Umatilla is facing the wrong way. Westbound riders are getting two warnings, while eastbound riders are getting none. Who can we tell to turn the sign around?
