Portland State University
Center for Transportation Studies
Fall 2007 Transportation Seminar Series

Speaker: Eric Lundgren
Topic: The Wheels of Fortune: Weather Prophet Pague, Governor Geer, & Portland’s Original Network of Cycle Paths

A little over a century ago Portland was building and enjoying a network of dedicated bicycle paths. For a brief and glorious half-decade, bicycles were a focus for road-planning and road-building. At a time when Portland seeks to gain Platinum-level recognition as a Bicycle Friendly Community, we can look back at a few of the ingredients in Portland’s first golden age of bicycling.

When: Friday, November 30, 2007, 12:00-1:30 pm
Where: 204 Urban Center

Holiday Bike Drive – translators needed

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The Community Cycling Center is holding its annual Holiday Bike Drive, a wonderful event that provides helmets, bikes and bike safety education to hundreds and hundreds of deserving children in Portland.

Volunteers are needed to help translate for those families that don’t speak English. We need people who can help translate Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Positions include helping registrations, guiding kids through the process of receiving helmets and bikes, and bike safety education.

If you are interested, please email me at volunteer(at)communitycyclingcenter(dot)org, and I will provide you more information, including dates and shifts.

**** I promise that this will be one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences you’ve ever had. For more information about the Holiday Bike Drive, please read an excellent story and see the pictures from Bike Portland.

It’s been over a year since I first shared the news that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) was considering improvements to the ailing Bryant Street bike and pedestrian bridge.

Now, I’m pleased to learn that the Piedmont and Arbor Lodge neighborhoods — in close partnership with ODOT — are moving forward with their efforts to make the bridge safer, more attractive, and more well-known.

Eastside Theater History Bicycle Tour

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Portland has so many great old cinemas, many of them built during the “Golden Age”–1910s through 1930s. This ride will explore theaters throughout the eastside–some still standing and functioning as cinemas, some just a memory. After the full ride we’ll take in a movie at one of these grand palaces, bring appropriate cash if you’d like to join us! (End time is approximate.) Also, there will be a potluck brunch at the hostel before the ride (11am cooking, noon eating), stop on by early to fuel up for the trip1

The fourth public event for the Sellwood Bridge project will be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Oaks Park Dance Pavilion.

Presentations will be held every hour, beginning at 6:00 pm, and will be followed by a question and answer session. The goal for this meeting is to share information about the alternatives that have been selected for detailed analysis in the draft environmental impact statement (draft EIS), obtain public feedback on preferred bridge types for a replacement structure, and share information about potential funding sources.
