Bike tour operator is latest entrant into mayoral race
A local entrepreneur who operates “sustainability focused” bike tours and who founded a successful web hosting business has just announced his candidacy for mayor.
26 year-old Slav Davidzon sent an email to supporters this morning announcing his candidacy that said in part,
New Sauvie Island bridge will give bikes more breathing room
With all the recent talk about the Sellwood and Columbia River bridge projects, I haven’t heard a peep about the Sauvie Island bridge.
Last time I looked (this weekend), construction on the new bridge is moving right along. According to a press release from Multnomah County, the new arch span will be installed on Friday, December 7th.
Sauvie Island is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Portland cyclists. At just about 10 flat miles north of downtown, the scenic roads are a magnet for all types of cyclists; from triathletes in training, to biking berry pickers and cyclocross racers.

Local author and historian Eric Lundgren — who previously shared his research on Portland’s first “Cycle Park” — will speak on the topic of Portland’s bike history this Friday (11/30) at Portland State University.
Lundgren’s talk is part of the ongoing Transportation Seminar Series at Portland State University’s Center for Transportation Studies (CTS). Former talks in the series — which are all streamed live and archived online — have featured Rutgers University Professor John “Make cycling irresistible” Pucher and economist Joe “Green Dividend” Cortright.
Lundgren says his talk will take a spin into our bikey past, to a time over a century ago, when Portland was building a network of dedicated bicycle paths. Here’s more from the event notice:
Mr. Watzig responds to feedback on his bike platform
“I would welcome community input to determine whether or not it is feasible and safe to allow bicyclists to roll through a right turn…on all stop signs…”
–mayoral candidate Gerhard Watzig
This morning I wrote about Portland’s latest candidate for mayor, Gerhard Watzig. My story relied on information gleaned from Watzig’s campaign website and a comment he left on Commissioner Sam Adams’ blog several months ago.
The story inspired many of you to contact Mr. Watzig to air your dissatisfaction about his views on bikes.

Saga of ‘A cyclist named James’ ends on a positive note
“Our community, via this website, came together to solve a public safety problem affecting bicyclists and pedestrians.”
–Officer Robert Pickett, SE Precinct
It all started back in May of 2006 when I read a post to the Portland Bike Forums titled, I was harassed by a cyclist named James this morning.
The post, left by Erica (last name withheld), detailed a scary interaction with a stranger that occurred while she biked to work in downtown Portland.

some cash on a new light!
As part of their See & Be Seen safety campaign, the City of Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) wants to encourage more bicycle riders to use lights.
In addition to a marketing campaign and special events, now they’ve got a bike light coupon program that makes it easier to get a deal on a new light. You can print out the coupon yourself (links to PDF) and then take it to a list of 13 participating local bike shops for 15% off lights and reflective equipment.

Meet Gerhard Watzig, a 50-year Portland resident, local flower shop owner, and son of a Washington turkey farmer.
Yesterday Mr. Watzig threw his hat in the ring to go up against City Commissioner Sam Adams in a bid to be Portland’s next mayor.
His announcement and his take on the issues has already caught the eye of the Portland Mercury and the Portland Business Journal.
