Vendors, crowds made for a great BikeCraft

We packed the Lucky Lab in Northwest Portland last night for the third annual BikeCraft.
The crowds kept the artists and vendors busy and many folks walked away with some fantastic, locally made items.
Once again, I was very impressed with the quality and selection of the bike-inspired goods that were available.
Some of the hot items were Tiago DeJerk’s awesome stencil paintings, Liz Dickey’s chain ring clocks, Caroline’s hats, Amy DeRosso’s stoneware plates, and, well, check out the photo gallery or watch the slideshow below for more…

Does anyone else think that the Lucky Lab should really be doing a better job with bike parking? I don't mean that they should be able to accommodate as many bikes as we had last night; that's an unusual event. But I saw no staple racks outside, and one lone indoor ribbon rack, so we're talking accommodation for, oh, about 8 bikes. This is a) Portland, and b) a pub that bills itself as bike-friendly, and c) 2007. It just seems like it's time to step it up a notch.
I'm doing that thing where I'm ranting in blog comments, aren't I? I'll shut up and write the Lab a letter...

Great event last night. The energy was electric. And the artists deserve a hand...thank you for helping make Portland the City that it is.

I saw someone wearing a shirt there last night that said 'I bike portland' in the same vein as the I heart NY shirts. I want this shirt! Does anyone know where I can find one?

It was super fun last night! Got some great stuff talked to some awesome people.
Just wanted to say about the bike parking at Lucky Lab NW: I go there pretty often (tuesday night is cheap beer) and the place is usually pretty empty compared to the one is SE. Only maybe once out of every ten times I go do I even have to lock up my bike outside on a rail. So, basically it would be great if they had more bike parking but it would be even better if more people used it.

This was the first BikeCraft I've been to and the merchandise kicked butt. Really impressive and creative array of wares on display.
I confess, though, that I'd vote for a different venue in a heartbeat. Aside from being somewhat out-of-the-way, the space was too small for the number of vendors and the crowd. It was hot in there, and hard to get close enough to some of the tables to see what was available. And then there's the "seeing" problem. I admit I don't have very good night vision, but man was that place dimly lit. I bought a cap from Shaun Deller somewhat on faith that the colors were as nice as I was hoping they were, because I couldn't really see it clearly. Happily, it is nice!
I just hope that next year you can find a venue more in the spirit of Hemingway: a clean, well-lighted place ...

Victims of your own success. I think the night was absolutely awesome.
We hustled over so we could get one of Tiago's paintings (and hopefully, a few more later!) and, yeah, it was crowded and hot and loud and... what can you say? The holiday shopping season started early. What, you think door-buster sales are only for Yukon-driving breeders in the 'burbs?
But I gotta say, Jessica, whining about the bike parking at the Lab is like a Hummer driver whining about parking spaces being too small. With all that going on for bikes in this town, you blast the Lab PUBLICLY complaining that their INDOOR bike parking which is routinely under-utilized, wasn't prepared for a freakin' craft-fair with a bike-theme? There are exactly how many other restaurants with indoor bike parking in this town, and you're gonna upbraid them? I love the BTA, y'all are the bomb, but every so often, like in this situation, it makes the BTA sound ungrateful.

Oh... and the maker of that cap you mention is Caroline from Little Package.
It's the Brett Jarolimek cap and she is giving all proceeds from sales of it to the Brett Jarolimek fund.

It was great -- we had an awesome time! I was a little curious, though, what made it so different from last year's down at City Hall? Was that a partnership between two craft fairs? That was kind of cool to have stuff there that was just "crafty."
But, like I said, great crafts and a lot of spirit there -- would love to see the whole Lucky Lab taken up with the fair next year.

re: #13 -- In defense of both Jessica R. and the BTA, I am sure that Jessica was speaking only on behalf of herself, not representing any group or organization. Jessica hasn't worked for the BTA in over a year now.
Personally, I LOVE the indoor bike rack at Lucky Lab NW--especially in the summer when they open up the big garage doors in front. When the pub's not too busy, you can roll right thru the front door into the pub and pedal (slowly and carefully) to the indoor rack before dismounting. Nice!

Thom, I know I'm setting the bar pretty high, but I'm routinely seeing 20, 30, 40 bikes parked outside pubs in this town, locked to each other, stacked on top of each other, nine deep blocking the sidewalk...It used to be that a couple of staple racks was enough, but times have changed. I just think we (business owners, advocates, the City) haven't quite caught up to our huge jump in bike parking demand. Believe me, I'm all for supporting bike-friendly businesses, but I also think we bikes should settle for crumbs. And the Lab is known for being bike-friendly, so I would have thought that a new Lab pub would have even more parking than the old one. One indoor rack is fantastic...for the 6 to 8 people who get in, but wouldn't you think they'd need to accommodate more people than that on a sunny summer evening?
Also, it's sort of nice not to work for the BTA now so I can have my own big fat opinions in public... ;)

Every type of advocacy requires walking a fine line. And I appreciate the need to push and be aggressive. I do, even if I didn't agree this time.
It's not easy being on the leading edge, Jessica. I appreciate the bravery and stiff spine that you and the BTA show in leading this town toward biketopia. You sure don't do it sitting on your hands.
Don't let nervous-nellies like me prevent you from raising hell. Keep charging. When you go a little overboard, we'll holler.
