We’re big fans of Artcrank, billed by its founder Charles Youel as “A poster party for bike people.” The event first came to Portland in 2009 and has returned each year since to inspire and entertain us with its creative representations of the thing we all know and love

While it won’t be back this year, Youel got in touch with us yesterday to share the news that Portland is still in his plans. He’s scaling back live events and has turned his focus toward a new website which launched this week. Similar to his live shows Artcrank.com features 30 artists who’ve created bike-inspired posters.

Of the 30 artists featured in his first online exhibition, three of them are from Portland.

Artcrank is one of our favorite events. For the past five years, this one-night gallery show and party has brought a refreshing mix of art and community to Portland. With the show returning this Saturday night (10/4), we thought it’d be fun to share a special sneak peek of what you’ll see.

As per usual, all the posters displayed at this weekend’s show were produced by local artists in limited quantities. 29 artists will be featured this year and their creative, provocative, bike-inspired works of art are available for just $50 each. This is an excellent opportunity to decorate your house, apartment, locker, cubicle, cargo bike box, or whatever. One of the posters, commissioned by event sponsor Clif Bar, will benefit national bike advocacy group People for Bikes.

The big change this year is that the venue has moved from downtown to the east side with Velo Cult (1969 NE 42nd Ave) taking on hosting duties. It’s free to get and the show runs from 4:00 to 10:00 pm.

As promised, here’s your sneak peek…[Read more…]

“Bikes are the world’s most fun, accessible way to get around. Posters are the world’s most fun, accessible art form. ARTCRANK brings them together.”

That’s the simple yet powerful idea behind Artcrank, an event that opened last night in downtown Portland and continues tonight at 5:00 pm. 34 artists have hung their bike-inspired posters at the Cleaners gallery on SW 10th and Stark and they’re all for sale at $40 a piece.

The Artcrank Poster Show is coming to Portland this Thursday (10/7). The event, billed as a “Poster party for bike people,” was a big success when it came to town last year. This year we’re doubly excited for its arrival because we’ve got a poster of our own in the show.

The Artcrank concept is so simple it’s beautiful (both literally and figuratively). A bunch of talented artists share their bike-inspired work on the walls of the The Cleaners at Ace Hotel gallery space in downtown Portland. Proceeds from sales on the night of the show go to the artists and local non-profit Bikes to Rwanda. It’s an excellent opportunity to showcase (and support) local art and our shared love of bicycling all at once.[Read more…]

The latest evidence of the intersection between bicycles and Portland’s First Thursday art scene (remember the handmade bike show back in August?) was on full display at the debut of the Artcrank Poster Show last night.

29 Portland artists were part of the event and each of them hung one bike-themed poster, all of which were for sale for the reasonable price of $30. Of that $30, $25 went to the artist and $5 went to local non-profit Bikes to Rwanda.[Read more…]

Among the artists selected to take part in the show are several whose names you might recognize for their previous work in the bike scene and/or as vendors at our annual BikeCraft event. They include:[Read more…]
