🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

Naked Bike Ride: Know before you go -UPDATED

World Naked Bike Ride - Portland-16

Last year.

Just a few days left until Portland’s annual skin-only cycling soiree, the World Naked Bike Ride. Last year, an estimated 5,000 took part (more than doubling the 2008 total), making it the largest naked bike parade in North America (if not the world?).

If recent growth trends continue (see graph below), organizers say they could get well over 10,000 riders this year. Sound like fun?! If you plan to roll out on Saturday night, here are some things to keep in mind.

Ride Report
We met at Petit Provence on Division and geeked out on all the old French bikes for a half hour or so. Trevor showed up and shared his very detailed knowledge of Cycles Peugeot. Other attendees had questions about their bikes, some of which we could answer. After the geek out session we rode down Clinton and through Ladd’s Addition to Clay and took a turn around the Esplanade and Waterfront Park, back over the Hawthorne and meandered up to the Laurelthirst Tav. We wanted to stop at Migration Brewing on Gleason but it was closed. What?

We made several other stops as the night wore on and people dropped off. We ended the event at the Sapphire Hotel for food and more libations. I think everyone had a good time. Sadly, no one took pictures.

Ride Report: Fallout Shelters of Portland

Report
A great group of around 50 joined up at the Lloyd Center to hear the history of fallout shelters and the civil defense program in Portland. After a bit of history we bombed through the underground parking labyrinth and emerged on the other side where we visited our first stop: the designated and signed fallout shelter in the Lloyd Center Macy’s building.

We visited a few other similar structures in town and talked cold war history along the way, and then made our way up to our final destination: an underground civil command center built to be used as a city hall in the case of nuclear attack in the side of Kelly Butte. The shelter has had a history of visitors and modifications since it was made defunct, so it was well sealed and it took us a while to find the front, but we had a good time rummaging around looking for air vents, escape hatches, and buried cold war treasure.

It was a great group, and almost everybody stuck around to the very end (even with the long ride and very steep hills at times). I think I will make this an annual event!

Description: It is a older lugged purple Bianchi (with the “n” removed to spell “Bia chi”) mountain bike base with; green painted well beat-up fork, BMX thread-less stem, 3″ riser bars (pink grips), single speed chain tensioner, Surly 1×1 hub and Mavic rim rear wheel.
Most notable is a TIN WHEEL COVER on the front wheel, this could be removed as it is zip tied to spokes but this is a one of a kind alteration and I feel pretty free saying if you see someone with this very notable aspect you can confront them as a bike thief/stolen bike rider. Even without this the gear ratio is kinda silly for street riding so if you see someone spinning and the other details match the same goes.

Ride Report: Pedal Potluck Picnic

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Reporter – Shawn Granton
Ride Date – Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Ride Report
Despite all the rain we had yesterday, ten intrepid cyclists showed up at the Alberta Co-op (NE 15th and Alberta) for the PedalPalooza installment of this all-summer ride. We took lovely side streets through NE for about 6 miles, ending at Montavilla Park, NE 82nd and Glisan. Montavilla has covered picnic tables, so we managed to stay dry for our feast of pasta, asparagus, cheese, and beer. Afterwards, the majority of us retired to Vintage in Montavilla’s “Drinking District” (SE Stark between 78th and 82nd) for adult beverages and stimulating conversation.

Portland Parks & Recreation says a landslide in Forest Park has closed Leif Erikson Drive, resulting in a closure of the gravel road that is popular for biking, hiking and running.

According to PP&R spokesperson Beth Sorensen, the road is now closed between milepost 7 and milepost 7.25 and is not expected to be reopened until repairs are completed in October.
