🚨 Please note that BikePortland slows down during this time of year as I have family in town and just need a break! Please don't expect typical volume of news stories and content. I'll be back in regular form after the new year. Thanks. - Jonathan 🙏

Thoughts on TriMet and a personal message from ‘Al M’

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

If you haven’t been following along in the coverage and comments (nearly 300 of them) about TriMet in the last few days, let me try and bring you up to speed.

On Monday, I reported about a collision between a bike and a bus on Hawthorne. A guy on a bike claimed a bus came from behind him and squeezed him into a parked car. Coincidentally, I had just heard from two readers with complaints about TriMet bus operators. With all of this in mind, I published a story the next day outlining stories of three “aggressive TriMet bus operators” (note the new and improved headline).

Friday Opinion: Advocacy groups should do more to leverage oil anxiety

[Publisher’s note: I’ve got a lot of opinions, but it’s perilous for me to try and weave them into the daily news stories here. So I’m going to try and start writing them up, once a week, in the form of the Friday Opinion column. Here goes…]

With the ongoing and depressing (on many levels) disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I’ve been wondering — why aren’t bike non-profits doing more to seize the moment and turn anger about the oil spill into more support for biking?

The main criticism of President Obama’s recent speech was that he didn’t grab hold of us and offer up a tangible way we could turn our anxiety about the spill into action. He spoke of “now” being the moment to do something to make it less likely this will ever happen again.

Something like, say, ride a bike more often?

OK Portland, it’s time to step up and take care of a good friend in need. That good friend is Sunday Parkways, an absolute gem of an event that we are all very lucky to have.

Word from organizers is that the event is in need of a bunch more Superheroes (volunteers) to swoop in and make sure it remains a successful event. Put bluntly; without more community ownership — both physical and financial — Sunday Parkways could be in serious trouble.

I’ll save the financial details for later, but what’s urgently needed now are more Intersection Superheros. According to my friend Neal Armstrong with Good Sport Promotion (the company hired to manage the volunteer effort), they need a total of 200 Intersection Superheroes to monitor, direct, and divert traffic as well as chat with nearby residents to make sure they are cool with the event.

-Watch video below-

TriMet has released the onboard video from a collision between a bus and a bike that happened on SE Hawthorne earlier this week.

The video clearly shows Sebastian Case — who was featured in an Oregonian story about the incident — riding his bike on the sidewalk east of SE 12th about four seconds prior to the collision. Case then enters the roadway after the bus had already begun passing him. He then tries, unsuccessfully, to squeeze between the bus and a parked van.

City of Portland Commissioner Nick Fish, who oversees Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), has just announced five new management initiatives that will “address ecological and recreational concerns about Forest Park.”

Fish is reacting to mounting public pressure to do something about the deteriorating health of the park. This pressure came to a head last month with a research report published by City Club of Portland titled, “Call to Action.” That report admonished the Parks Bureau for neglecting the park and not completing a number of studies and surveys called for in the 1995 Forest Park Natural Resources Management Plan.

Interesting new bikes we might be seeing in Portland

Fisher Collection.

Two big announcements in the bike world this week could result in some interesting new bikes showing up on the streets of Portland.

The first is from the biggest bike brand in the world, Trek. Trek announced Tuesday that they will shelve the Gary Fisher brand as a standalone line and from now on Gary’s bikes will be offered in the form of The Gary Fisher Collection, which will be be sold as part of the Trek line. I took a peak at the new Fisher bikes online yesterday and noticed one that looked particularly interesting for Portland: the Transport+.
