Sprockettes lead over 100 on annual Pedalpalooza ride

Sprockettes Ride-15

A sun-drenched field at Benson High

Some (finally!) hot summer weather led to a big turnout on the Sprockettes Ride last night. The ride was part of Shift’s Pedalpalooza, which runs through Sunday.

Here’s the report from Agent Rod Quake, followed by a slideshow of my photos:

The gorgeous weather brought 132 riders to this year’s ride. Fun times were had at our first stop, Benson High School field, where we played all kinds of fun, field day activities. Attendees had a great time playing Sprockettes Simon Says, Human Knot, double dutch, face painting, parachute games, and more.

Ride Report: PDX to Camas (photo)

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Reporter – Michelle Week
Ride Date – Tuesday, June 22, 2010
Ride Description

Ride Report
Only 5 brave souls ventured to the pulp and paper land of Camas Tuesday.

The ride went off without a hitch and exposed some new riders to the old evergreen hwy. In Camas we stopped by Camas bikes (the only bike store in Camas), took a quick tour of the historic downtown area and stopped for coffee at piccolo paradisio before venturing back towards Portland. We also met up with one of the few bike commuters in Camas and learned a little bit about what it’s like to ride every day in a town of 17,000 where 80% of its residents drive single occupancy cars out of town to work.

We made great time and were headed back over I-205 forty minutes before “mocktails on the bridges” got set up. Only a slight disappointment given how gorgeously the weather held out for us.

Thanks for a great ride, thanks to BikePortland and the Mercury for publishing it, and hopefully the 5 person critical mass of Camas will expose more drivers to alternative transportation.

Council passes Division Streetscape project: What’s in it and what’s not

Portland City Council officially adopted the Bureau of Transportation’s Division Streetscape and Street Reconstruction Project yesterday.

The plan was over a year in the making and it will impact the stretch of SE Division between SE 10th and 39th Avenues. The $7 million project will repave the street, add a full complement of “green streetscape elements” (like bioswales and curb extensions), improve transit stops, and more. Construction is slated to begin in 2011.

Ride provides info and inspiration for transportation activism

[Publisher’s note: The ride report below came in as part of our ongoing coverage of Pedalpalooza 2010. I thought it was so informative that I decided to put in on the Front Page. The ride was led by volunteer members of Active Right of Way (AROW), a grassroots transportation activism group that began with a “conversation” back in January. Their tagline is “Take control of your streets.” On Monday night’s ride, they stopped at several locations around town to discuss problems and solutions as well as share contact information of people in positions of influence.

Special thanks to AROW volunteer Steve Bozzone (who also does the Intersection 911 blog) for taking photos and writing this report.]

Details on traffic impacts of two-month Broadway Bridge closure

Bike traffic on Broadway-22

Please note the PBOT traffic advisory below regarding an upcoming closure of the Broadway Bridge. The bridge will be completely closed to motorized traffic for two months starting July 6th, but it will remain open to biking and walking traffic. The closure is to facilitate streetcar construction.

Here’s a word from streetcar project spokesperson Julie Gustafson about how bike traffic will be impacted:

The south sidewalk will remain open to maintain bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. The only time it will be “closed” is when they do a bridge lift. These will be short duration closures similar to a normal bridge lift. There will be signing and defined paths for the bikes and peds to follow on both sides of the bridge. The Larrabee (eastern) side will have an additional ramp for bi-directional bike approach.
