Portland, OR – The 11th Annual Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge will feature elite riders, national and international champions and future world-class Olympians delivering some of the best cycling action in the United States while competing for track records and cash prizes.
The Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge is unique for its caliber of competitors, venue, and challenging course. The event will draw more than 100 elite women, men and masters 40+ competing for over $13,000 in prizes, making it one of the richest purse track races in the country. This year’s line-up includes two-time U.S. Olympian Jame Carney, and Travis Smith Canadian Olympic hopeful and currently the world’s number one ranked sprinter. The women’s field includes multi-time national champions Cari Higgins and Canadian world’s team member Monique Sullivan.
The Alpenrose Velodrome is one of only 20 bicycle racing tracks in the nation. With corners positioned at a 44-degree angle, racers must maintain a constant speed of 12.5 miles per hour in order to remain upright on the track, which won’t be a problem as these athletes will reach speeds up to 40mph. In addition to being one of the steepest banks in the nation, the track is also unique in that it is made of concrete; most others are wooden.
The Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge takes place on July 16, 17 & 18—this free three-day event will thrill spectators with the raw athleticism. On Friday evening, Papa Murphy’s Pizza will be giving away free pizza to the first 250 attendees.
