‘Ride Oregon’ website wins top tourism award

RideOregonRide.com, a website that promotes bike tourism in Oregon is set to receive the 2010 President’s Award from Travel Portland.

The Ride Oregon site was first officially conceived at the Oregon Bike Summit in 2008, where attendees said having one place to feature all the great rides in Oregon should be a high priority. From there, Travel Oregon provided start-up funds and hired local interactive brand strategy agency Substance to develop it.

The site has a myriad of features, including interactive maps, the ability to create a personal profile to share favorite routes, and much more.

RideOregonRide was unveiled at last year’s Oregon Bike Summit.

If you want to hatch big ideas about biking in Oregon — and who knows, maybe they will become a reality just like RideOregonRide.com — attend the upcoming Oregon Bike Summit in Portland on June 4th.

Description: White, 70’s peugeot triathalon. Yellow drop bars, with blue take holding a rip on the right handlebar. Blue stem, yellow stripes on the tires that don’t match. New back wheel/assembly that does not match the french parts on the front. I don’t have the serial number written down, and I don’t know the exact year or post length. It was given as a gift by a friend two years ago as a fix-it project, and I never bothered taking down that information. I don’t have photos of the bike, unfortunately.

Hard to believe it’s been a year since Jude Kirstein launched her custom wheel building business, Epic Wheel Works.

The City of Portland’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (PBAC) is mentioned frequently here on BikePortland, but did you know that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) also has an advisory committee that deals with bicycling projects and issues?

The Oregon Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (OBPAC) is an eight member, governor appointed committee that serves as the intermediary body between the public and ODOT, via the Oregon Transportation Commission. The group meets quarterly in communities statewide.

Local director Matt Briggs has received a city permit to allow for 40 feet of extra bike parking in front of the Bagdad for cyclists to attend the screenings.

“Deep Green” is an upbeat film all about renewable energy solutions to climate change. The film crew traveled to China, Europe, and around the world interviewing the top experts on this topic. Several local Portland experts and companies are also featured in the film. This is not a film about problems; this is a film about solutions. Updated — Citizen bike patrol coming for I-5 Delta Park area

The City of Portland plans to start up a citizen bike patrol to work the paths around Delta Park and Interstate 5 in North Portland.

According to an announcement for the upcoming training event that happens Tuesday (5/11), members of the new patrol would, “gather periodically and ride this area and report any illegal or suspicious activity to the Portland Police Bureau.”

City Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Wells is behind the new bike patrol. The program will be based on the City’s existing foot patrol program, the most successful of which is the Mt. Tabor Park Foot Patrol that has 27 active volunteer members who patrols the park, educates parks users, picks up litter and reports illegal activity.

The Office of Neighborhood Involvement will host the new group. To my knowledge, this will be Portland’s first ever bike patrol.

– An attempt to cap the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has failed. Meanwhile the government’s lack of increased regulation on other drilling projects is under fire, and a ban on drilling off the west coast is under consideration.

– In Portland, one woman’s efforts have succeeded in preventing trucks from idling for hours outside her low-income apartment building.

– Remember the kids who make scraper bikes in Oakland? There’s a beautiful and inspiring new film about them.
