Guest Opinion: The case against the Timberline MTB park

Amy Harwood

Publisher’s note: We’ve covered the Timberline MTB Park several times since the project became public in April 2010. Last week I was contacted by a member of Bark, a Mt. Hood Forest watchdog group working to stop the project. This guest article was written by Bark Board Member Amy Harwood (she also provided the photo below of Mt. Hood).

This week lovers of Mt. Hood are stuck between a rock and a mountain of issues. On the one hand mountain bike enthusiasts are even closer to getting a world-class bike park on the slopes of one of America’s favorite peaks. On the other, the park is one of the best examples in recent history of how profit can rapidly trump concerns about the future of Mt. Hood’s wildlands.

Bark continues to stay engaged in efforts to stop the expansion, despite the risk of being swept onto an anti-bike blacklist. It’s worth stating why:

Woman says she was assaulted while bicycling on Gresham-Fairview Trail

Entrance to Gresham-Fair Trail off of SE Stark.

Portland resident Shyla Osborn, 45, says she was assaulted on March 12th while biking on the Gresham-Fairview Trail. According to Osborn, the incident occurred on the path between SE Stark and Glisan near 201st Ave.

Here’s how it went down according to Osborn:

“… I was assaulted by two teenage girls on the Gresham-Fairview trail in the Rockwood neighborhood, on the segment between Stark and Glisan. As I rode northward, they were strolling casually towards me, one on the left and one on the right edge of the trail (unremarkable on such a lovely sunny day); as I came closer and was about to pedal between them, I noticed that one of them was carrying a large tree branch. At this point, it was too late to turn back and get away: the girl on my left lunged in to corral me while her companion on my right swung the branch at my head like she was going for the bleachers. The blow cracked my boyfriend’s $70 helmet; another blow came down on my right shoulder. As soon as they hit their target, they ran off giggling and escaped over the chain-link fence of the one of the houses whose backyard faces the trail. They left me with a pretty nasty bump on my head and a bruised shoulder.”

The Monday Roundup

“The traffic was crazy… I really don’t do bicycles, but I will today.”
— Serena Williams

Let’s get right to it shall we? Here’s all the news and other interesting things we came across this past week…

— Add another major city to the bikeshare list: San Francisco has inked an agreement with Porltand-based Alta Bicycle Share for their system which is due to launch in August with 70 stations and 700 bikes (similar in size to Portland’s system).

— Bicycling is riding a wave of national attention right now. NBA superstar Kevin Durant features his love of bicycling in a major prime-time commercial for Degree deodorant and tennis champion Serena Williams biked to the Sony Open this weekend for a more practical reason — she simply wanted to avoid traffic. And don’t forget famous weatherman Al Roker!

Visit to the Lumberyard MTB Park -14

Business partners Michael Whitesel (L) and
Will Heiberg (with his dog Sarah) have created something special
at The Lumberyard.

Before this week, it’d been over a year since I last set foot in The Lumberyard, an indoor mountain bike park on NE 82nd Avenue in the Madison South neighborhood. Since then, business partners Will Heiberg and Michael Whitesel have been very busy. They’ve transformed a barren former bowling alley into a biking playground complete with a pub, full bar, retail and repair shop, event space, and much more.

Oregon Senate says cab drivers should be exempt from cell phone law

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“These are people who are struggling and their livings are made by whether or not they can pick folks up… This is their life.”
— Sen. Larry George, the bill’s sponsor

The Oregon legislature made a strange move on Monday that is very likely to make Portland roads less safe for everyone. By a vote of 19-11, the Senate passed a bill that adds yet another exception to the state’s existing cell phone law. Senate Bill 294, sponsored by Senator Larry George (R-Sherwood), allows a taxicab driver to use a “mobile communication device”, a.k.a. cell phone, while driving.

This is despite widespread evidence that using a cell phone while driving is very dangerous.

SB 294’s sponsor, Sen. Larry George (yes that Senator) got all 14 of his fellow Republicans to join him in supporting the taxicab exemption. The five Democrats who voted in favor of the bill included; Lee Beyer, Chris Edwards, Betsy Johnson, Ernie Roblan, and Chip Shields.
