Please note the following PBOT announcement of a detour that will impact major section of Rose Quarter bike route.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY:
Bicycle, bus traffic to be detoured in Rose Quarter
Mon. to Wed. for NE Wheeler Ave road maintenance

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that street maintenance will require the closure of a heavily traveled bicycle route in the Rose Quarter, Monday June 10 through Wednesday June 12.

A one-block section of NE Wheeler Avenue will be closed between the MAX light rail tracks and N Interstate Avenue. The closure will block all bus and bicycle traffic on the street. Automobile traffic is not allowed on the one-block section where the work will occur.

Though short, the site is on one of the busiest bike routes in Portland, carrying thousands of bicyclists a day. Cyclists are advised to expect delays and use alternate routes if possible, including the Broadway Bridge. Signs at the site will direct cyclists to use nearby sidewalks to get around the work area.

The public is also advised to travel cautiously, observe all lane closures and directions by flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

When should streets use sharrows, painted lanes and separation? (graphics)

Where, exactly, do sharrows belong?

Update: See below for a few other examples of graphics that try to answer this question.

There’s an interesting, useful bit of transportation wonkery in The Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s “Blueprint for World-Class Cycling” that came out this week: a visual guide to which sort of streets should get which sort of bike infrastructure.

This is obviously a complicated question, and it’s not something that’s ever going to be summarized by a single chart. But the question arises constantly. Last week, in a moment of heat, two Swan Island transportation advocates said the city would be better off without bike lanes near a crash-prone intersection of Interstate Avenue. Up in Vancouver, Wash., there’s a lively debate right now about whether sharrows are appropriate on a 35 mph four-lane street.

Here’s what the BTA’s new document has to say about the issue:

For some people, the connection between bikes and sexuality starts and ends with 5,000 nude bodies at this Saturday’s World Naked Bike Ride.

For seven years, the man who created Bike Smut has been proving that those people aren’t thinking nearly big enough.

Next Wednesday, Portland-based porn pro and self-described bikesexual revolutionary Phil Sano — often known by his nom de guerre, “the Rev. Phil” — launches the latest edition of his globetrotting revue, the Porny Express, at the Clinton Street Theater. Its press materials promise a “variety of representations of human sexuality, entirely created by amateur bike pornographers from all over the world.”

Kickoff parade riders share hidden gems of Pedalpalooza

From left: Hillary Jenkins, Acorn, Amanda Hugnkiss and The Red Wizard prepare for Thursday’s
Pedalpalooza kickoff ride and discuss the best rides of the month to come.

Once a year in a city park, Dropouts meet mountain climbers and cargo haulers meet tall bikers. For Portland bike lovers, the Pedalpalooza Kickoff Parade is the gathering of the tribes.

It’s also the first time most people start thinking about which rides they’re going to check out over the next three weeks. As the energy built in Holladay Park before Thursday’s kickoff ride, I asked some of the throng of riders present to share a secret: which Pedalpalooza ride were they looking forward to that not enough other people know about yet?

Here’s what I heard.
